It's 2014, I think it's great time for a new 70/80's (maybe 90's) thread.

Share some good vintage music, idols, images and stories here.

Bikes and bōsōzoku otaku welcome as well.

Has anyone noticed when watching videos from the 80's that people seem much more happy and amiable? It's hard to explain but I feel like people nowadays are more reserved and wary of other people and their surroundings. Always distrustful, like a pervasive population depression.

It's '80s, a shortening of 1980s. You use the apostrophe to mark the omitted part.

It's more or less fine to not use the apostrophe at all, but it's not fine at all to put it after the number. The s at the end is just a pluralizing ending. There exists a possessive ending 's, and you could theoretically use it to justify writing "80's", but it's singular, so "80's thread" would instead be a thread belonging/related to (the year) 80.

You'll have better chances of finding 80's animes if you ask peoples in the 70s and 80s mecha thread on /m/, sometimes we tend to talk about not-so-/m/-related shows.

Was 90's actually THAT bad for Japan?
I read that the great recession that we Americans experienced and started 2008 was similar to what Japan experienced in 1989.

I wouldn't be shocked when that spectacular bubble burst in the late 80s caused many jap youth back then to become NEET & hikky and became hardcore otaku for comfort... thus popularizing and mainstreaming the terms NEET/Hikikomori/Otaku to the jap news press.

I live in Kyushu and there aren't too many record stores that carry Japanese music near me. It's still seen as a DJ-related hobby, so you're mostly going to find club, reggae, and hip-hop stuff around here.

You'll almost certainly have luck with those artists in Tokyo though. Lots more collector-oriented shops there. There's a store in Ueno that almost exclusively carries 70s/80s music. I recall seeing Morita there. There are plenty of other hip places that would carry something like Angel'In Heavy Syrup. Tokyo is the place to be for psych/noise/etc.

Well it's not like the older idols weren't fairly cookie cutter themselves. For every Momoe or Seiko or Akina there's an endless number of one hit wonders and middling talents that never got anywhere. I'd honestly say Yukiko probably would've been in that list too if she hadn't died but I think she was one of the first idols with that real innocent moe quality where they could make her more of an ingenue type than what was done with Momoe early in her career (where they were really goddamn overt about the sexual aspect) so she probably actually would've done well until the end of the decade. Especially since they were getting big guns like Seiko and Ryuichi Sakamoto to write songs for her.

I guess it could all come down to the musical style in general too and preferring the '80s sound over the current sound. If you like '80s stuff you should definitely pick up Hitomitoi's last two albums (City Dive and Surfbank Social Club) because they're intentional throwbacks the '80s city pop sound and kind of early '90s summery sound respectively and they're both really great (having Ryusenkei and Dorian producing definitely helps).

I guess things were really different back then because idols nowadays obviously wouldn't be able to do that shit (i.e. Ai Kago, Minami Minegishi). Well they might be able to get away with the sex thing when the creep-o producer or manager that's like 25 years older wants some sweet young idol poon.

I guess that IS something the '70s and '80s had over the current day stuff. Akina was (is) a crazy talented singer, could put on a really good live performance, and I like that she had no problem experimenting with her sound. Releasing a pseudo-Cocteau Twinsish dream pop album at the height of your popularity takes some balls.

It basically sounds like Cocteau Twins lite to me which is a good thing; I really love the dream pop/shoegaze/etc. stuff so seeing her experiment with something vaguely in that direction was cool. I think that's why I really like Akina a lot: she wasn't content to coast off of what was working but was more than willing to experiment be it Fushigi's sound, the all-female (I believe) production of Crimson, the rock sound on Stock, Cross My Palm (an English album), etc. she always seemed to be trying new things and wanting to be an actual artist and not just an idol. Didn't always work out quite as well (and naturally went to shit once she tried to kill herself) but still. It's kind of funny, she was pushed as the new Momoe and really ended up being more like her in trying to do her own thing.

Maison Ikkoku is one of those animes i´ve been wanting to watch for a long time and i always seem to find excuses not to. So, it´s good? I watched Ranma like 10 years ago, and i ocassionally watch a random episode now and then and enjoy it a lot since, with the exception of the ocassional arc, there is not a plot once the characters are introduced. Also, the premise of Maisson.. sounds a lot like Love Hina, which i also liked but i felt dragged a lot in the Anime near the ending

Also, yukiko okada looks a bit like Momoko Tsugunaga, i can only imagine the shock of her death must have caused..
Lastly, any good dramas from that time? what do you think of Mama wa idol?

Do you really think that current idols (the big, mainstream ones) are any different? Because from what I can tell nothing has really changed, it's just that idols now how more stock personalities to be assigned and in fact are even more expected to "conform" to the moe expectations of the wota.

Do you really get huge idols who actually do the kind of attempts at doing their own thing that Akina did? Or out and out telling the companies to get fucked and making the music THEY want to make instead of what creepers want like Momoe did?

Speaking of Momoe, why was she so perfect?

Anyone else misses the natural look of Japanese women? I prefer the golden skin tone and the original beauty, rather than today's craze of colored leek hair and pale plastic doll skin. It makes them look soulless and plain.

I'm not really a pro like you guys and this is more towards 90s, but it always gives me a nice retro flash of better times. The kind that leaves you with a bitter sweet heavy feeling in your chest.

Its pure gold. We should do this more often guys.

The third guy singing (Kei Ogura | 小椋佳) wrote this song around '91. In case you want to look up more.

Depends on how you define "huge". BiS are pretty out there, and they're an "idol" group.
