I didn't see one, so let's have a thread dedicated to discussion of the touhou games themselves.

Feel free to ask for tips, brag (lie) about your best runs, or anything else related to the actual games themselves.

Myself, I've been trying to work my way up to 1CCing Mountain of Faith on Lunatic. Finally managed to get to a point where I can get past level 1 without dying. Too bad Hina is still pushing my shit in.

I've been trying to get past this part:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-16EEv4u_ew&t=33s

But those aimed bullets always seem to herd me against a wall and leave no room for maneuvering or trying to get to the other side. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong in my movement.

My very first Touhou game was 12.5, Fairy Wars. I didn't understand it at all. There weren't really any instructions. I kept dying over and over so I gave up. Later I downloaded the rest of the games and tried playing Stage 1 on each one. Then I understood the system a little better. Some of it was still really confusing though, like the youkai meter and time orbs in TH 8 IN. I studied the wikia and learned how to play the complex ones. I even beat a couple of them. Haven't 1CC'd any yet but I'm working on it

>> No.11717749

Reimu, homing - Because she has smaller hitbox, is better at precise movement (in my opinion), and because I like how much easier homing makes the stages in between bosses at higher difficulties as well as the added mobility it gives you since you don't have to worry about positioning quite as much.

I've never honestly found piercing shots that useful in Touhou.

Enemies just don't stack up that often, except for the minor fairies, and they die pretty much instantaneously.

Anyone have any tips for a person some what new to the game? I have been mostly focusing on playing EoSD trying to 1cc normal, but not doing very well farthest I have gotten without continue is Patchouli on stage 4. hahahaha.

Honestly, I just think it's a cool shot type.
It tends to have decent range and damage, the piercing can be helpful in certain areas, and tends to look nice visually.

From what I understand, equipping special abilities and equipable can increase your Taoist, Shinto, and Buddhist levels. If your Taoist levels are much higher than your Shinto or Buddhist levels, then your ranged attacks will become more powerful. High Shinto gives your ranged attacks homing. High Buddhist dramatically decreases the range on your ranged attacks, they'll better complement your melee attacks.

The best Touhou game you'd like would most likely be SoEW. Forget all fancy post Touhou 2 shit, this is where the peak is at. The rest of the series is simply just riding on a wave of awwesome set by this game. Let me list you why-

- Layers? This game is good for those. Not only do bullets layer with each other, but even the background and enemy spawns are going into the stray and you have to dodge them as well just to be sure. Also, the penultimate boss has some next level shit and you have to dodge her danmaku while also dodging her options which spawn the bullets. Sick.

- There are no repeated patterns or shit like that, bosses choose a random attack from their pool and fuck you in the ass with it. To hell with boring memo, this is the true RNG.

- If you wish for good and realistic quality, you probably should play this game. The enemies are so well made and the bullets look so neat you would not believe it. You can't simply see all of it at times, that's how awesome the graphics are. A true classic.

- The bullet hitboxes are as they are. No guessing around. No fancy shit. Just pure looking at stuff and dodging it. No aliases, the bullets are who they are: bullets.

- Design? Man, this game has got it all. Sick star orbs from the deep hell, six mystic lovecraftian balls. And the stage one has a fucking tank. A. Fucking. Tank.

- Spamming bullets, here it is. Forget about killing the player, here the screen gets so full with shit you wouldn't believe it. Truely random and cool danmaku.

I could probably name more, but I'll just have to go and play the game. I'm 100% serious, it's the best Touhou.

>> No.11718354

>>11718334
Just find a good projectile to spam in 10.5. The AI are pretty stupid, so it's not tough to beat them in a projectile war in that game. As for spell cards, just remember that grazing is your best friend. Some spell cards can be made much easier by using your own spell cards as well. And unlike 7.5, you don't need to 1cc the game to get the good ending, so don't worry about using those continues.
As for MoF, the most general advice I can think of is to spam bombs. You can bomb much more often in that game than the others, and bombing in the right areas can give you a ton of points. As for Kanako, don't be afraid to spam bombs, and watch some videos on fighting her. Streaming her attacks is much easier once you've seen someone else do it. The only card that should still give you trouble is Mountain of Faith. There's not much you can do to prepare yourself for that one, so just make sure you have an extra life or two when you get that far.

More recently, I have discovered that once you've built the muscle memory required to chain in DOJBL, the game actually becomes much more relaxing. The frustration and sleepless nights, fits of rage and bouts of depression have finally paid off.

The same effect happens when I'm playing a rhythm game for a really long time. Hitting the notes becomes a natural thing, like breathing or walking. That is, until somebody slams on your door and breaks the immersion.

Post a screenshot (or no image at all) instead of fanart next time.

It depends on what do you want to do with the stage. In case you want to survive better, I'd suggest forming a solid route for Fujiyama Volcano and using the circling method for the first survival spell, as it's less strict that way. For Volcano, you can either copy my tactic (http://replays.gensokyo.org/download.php?id=31477)), copy someone else's (there's a good bunch of replays), or form your own strategy in spell practice. Also, it might be good to learn a bit more aggressive route for first four big fairies in the later stage portion (which killed you), as you can effectively cheese them on any youkai, all of the teams and two of the human shots.

If you want to score (on solo Yukari), I would suggest looking at the stage portion in the first place, starting from the item collection. While your Mokou performance is okay, you're dropping hundreds of millions of points during the stage simply by not gathering items above the PoC.

Simply collecting items is not that difficult, and you can either copy a route from some of these replays:
http://replays.gensokyo.org/index.php?u=&g=8&p=Yukari&t=--&d=5&ch=0&order=score&sort=DESC&pg=2 (the first Yukari solo scores are on the second page)
http://score.royalflare.net/th08/score.cgi?type=score_nf&level=5&chara=6&route=0
OR you can take your time learning the stage and create your own route for item collection. I strongly suggest the latter option, as I find it great fun to sit down and figure things out by myself.

Good luck, and keep us updated with your progress!

Yes, I'm the DDP slowbrainer. I can clear the game pretty consistently if I just completely disregard chaining and bomb everything, but my main issue comes from losing all will to continue the run after dropping a chain or dying/bombing before 1-4. At least I'm noticing some small improvements here and there.

I had a lot of fun with the game until I realized just how bad I was at it. I remember how good it felt to chain up to the 1-2 midboss, but now I just get upset if I can't chain past the midboss, so I've mostly been making use of save states and practicing the second loop instead. Even though it kicks my ass even more, practicing bosses is a million times more fun than having to read through the full extent of the law shit each time I F3 it.

First of all, your goal should be to beat all six stages on normal mode without continues. That unlocks the Extra Mode. You can then try beating that, or beating it on higher difficulties.
You should focus on survival until you can reliably beat it, so don't do anything too risky to get points. Points do give you lives though, so when it's safe, fly up to the top of the screen to autocollect the items.

I have been within 1/8 of both Miko's and Kanako's last spell cards, on normal, in the past 4 hours. I got to Oku as well but fell short on her third to last spellcard. I am so fucking mad right now I am just going to bed and try again another day when my anger subsides.

I'll be your friend stranger. I have only 1'ccd PCB, IN, and EoSD. I have fallen short of beating Ran and Mokou on their last spells too. Now that I think of it maybe I get super nervous during last spells

Sadly, no. I'm currently at around 50~60M or so, which wasn't one of my original goals, but I ended up getting it in a run where I just said fuck it and kept going after dropping the chain on 1-3. In which run I managed to chain most of 1-4, and a little bit of 1-5, but sadly bombed a little later in the stage. 1-6 was an absolute train wreck. Two deaths, about a million bombs, yeah, shit.

The run happened about a month ago, and I haven't really done any runs since. Instead, I've been using my practice time to focus more on the weaker parts of my survival game, 1-5, 1-6, which are now the usual bastards that cause me to restart. The game actually became a lot more enjoyable after I stopped raging and restarting over dropping a chain, it's also much more productive to practice the rest of the run instead of just F3ing instead.

May I talk about the fangames here please? I just got into this game and beat the first "real" boss I guess. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Pic related, that was very mean of the game to do that to me.

You forgot the main skill. I just wanted to post this picture

Satori's strongest power is actually status affecting skills (mindblast, enervation etc), but physical Satori is super cool too. I would probably only add death zapper instead of something (if you've learned it).
And don't forget to equip IND necklaces (if you have any and you're not using them on Sanae/Byakuren) to have higher chance of paralysis/poison/daze on hit.

So that what's what Induction means.... I don't have the manual so I didn't know. What does POT do then?

Also thanks and my Satori did learn constrict but that damage is seems a bit high. Any good formation besides Hinotori skydance and freefight?

>> No.11742058

>POT
I actually don't remember what it does. ..Wait I think it may increase EVA? In any case it's not a vital part of the game; more along the lines of "luck" in others.

As for formations, some fights benefit from some of the more situational ones. Formations that boost death RES, EVA, IND, etc. My memory is shitting on me right now, but the less extreme version of skydance and "attack and defense keystone" (I think) are also good.

There is lots of information on wiki:
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/The_Genius_of_Sappheiros
Each point of POT adds +0.5% to your crit rate and increase RES stat by 0.25.
And each point in RES increases your resistance to status effects by 0.5-1% depending on how much IND enemy has.

Physical Satori is a novelty, but it works, however she does not get any kind of defenses to go with it. If you've neglected a fighter, or badly need another one, Satori can do that role, provided you've trained her in the abilities.

Ah, I was wondering since I was trying to do it around the same time. Since then I've basically been doing that too, plus trying to learn the 1-5 connection without resorting to state loading the exact part. Watching how it's done over and over doesn't seem to help but I have done it a couple times.

Commander works too.

Yeah, I've pretty much given up on chaining 1-5 until I can NMNB it consistently. The best I've done is NM1B of 1-5, but I'm still experimenting with different strategies. Personally, I just load states from the beginning, as guilty as I felt about it at first, being able to practice optimizing the 1-2 chain without going through 1-1 is a lot less painful.

The streaming hell section is something I overlooked since I hardly ever saw it before. And I barely watch replays unless I really like the game, which I do for DDP, but I've only really watched an obsolete replay for it, which was still pretty decent enough for me anyway.

Best of luck to you. I believe we'll be able to get there some day, if we practice hard enough. If anything else, practicing DDP has made me more patient when it comes to other STGs.

Don't know if you know, but the lazer actually move further across the screen every time it fires, so the first time it fires you can almost stay under yuyuko, but by the 6th or so you'll be up against the screen's edge.

Not knowing that really screwed me over, but once you know it the card is easy modo

Hm, so after nearly two months of not touching my pad, I decided to do a few quick practice runs of 1-4 and 1-5. NMNB and near full chain on 1-4, and four NM1B's of 1-5 in a row.

And yet, something still feels wrong about using pad. It's strange finding that I'm actually better on pad, when months ago I was trash with it, but I'm not complaining. I think that getting it drilled into my head that keyboard is better is possibly what's making playing on pad so difficult for me, it just doesn't feel right using anything but keyboard or stick now. ;_;

It would seem that whenever I capture spells at Kaguya, I proceed to make mistakes on the nonspells. (second and third nonspell this time.)

I can handle Kaguya's first spell on Lunatic somewhat alright (about 80% capture rate), but the Normal version I have no idea as the orbs spawn so low on the screen they can overwhelm me easily unless I go for the misdirecting strategy. It could be just being unused to the pattern, but the attack should still prove itself rather difficult for the given mode.

While the performance is still rather unimpressive and low, I'll possibly try some other character for now, or do a FinalA run.
