Why does ZUN always use that MIDI-trumpet (the "ZUNpet", as it is sometimes known) in his works? It gets old, and sometimes it makes no logical sense where it's placed. Hasn't he learned to choose better instruments?

Pic is kinda related.

All MIDI is good MIDI. Appreciate the MIDI.

trumpet is fitting for videogame music, its very bold and bright sounding.

besides the only other two lead classical instruments are violin, flute, maybe clarinet takes over for a bit.

He loves the trumpets. He said so in his interview. He misses the old MIDI and dislikes how game music (and style of games) is transitioning away from what he finds nostalgic.
I'm on his side on this. The trumpets are nice.

>> No.11690803

Because it's a loud, leading brass instrument. Trumpets always carry melodies.

>> No.11691118

His trumpets aren't the GM2 MIDI trumpets. They're generated from a sound module.

I'd imagine most of us have gotten used to it by now, at least I doubt a few horns would turn away a dedicated toubro such as one who visits /jp/ regularly. You should appreciate composition a bit more!

Dude, trumpets are great.

I love shitty midi trumpets
Dungeon synth is such a good genre conceptually, just thinking about the fact that a few people made so much dark fantasy music with shitty blaring midi synths that it became its own genre makes me happy

Since ZUN said he actually plays the trumpet and owns one, will we ever hear him play it or a song that uses it?

>> No.11691328

ZUNpiano is better.

It's because ZUN doesn't bow to normalfag opinions like this that he has managed to build such a loyal (if limited) fanbase.

I'm more than a little biased since I played trumpet.

I was reading a Touhou Let's Play on the Something Awful forums, and the guy posted each music track with his own comments. He complained about the overuse of trumpets a lot (and mentioned others did the same) and now I can't unnotice it.

I wish the music still sounded PC-98y. I don't know what that's called. Maybe that's what FM synthesis is. It sounded more arcadey, I guess something like Zuntata would make.

This is a good example. It's a very simple melody but it's like yeaaahhh I'm gonna win at this shmup. Now it would all be blerrrp trumpets.

Sure it is, OP. Sure it is.

Some songs use them really well. Like Wind God Girl, Lullaby of Deserted Hell or Blue Sea of 53 Minutes.

However, I'm with this guy. >>11691328

You will get more results in plural (though still not many).

They're best together.

And that's why Night Bird is the pinnacle of ZUN music.

It's not MIDI, Touhou games no longer include a MIDI audio option. MIDI is a music data format to which different "sound fonts" can be applied. The "ZUNpet" sound is "Romantic Trumpet" from the Edirol SD-80 synthesizer.

Anyway, ZUN's classical music education was in... drumroll... THE FUCKING TRUMPET. What do you expect? There are plenty of Touhou songs without the ZUNpet.

I want to learn the ZUNpet, but I heard it's even harder than ZUNpiano. Maybe I should just stick with ZUNguitar...
