Why do people play these obtuse shitty games from 20 years ago? There's better stuff available now

I'm not really one for retro games, and normally I would agree with you. However Mother has aged extremely well, and is still to this day better than many modern RPGs imo.

I've never gotten the feel Mother gives off from any other game I've ever played.

Computer graphics have advanced so much in recent times that you can now lose yourself in beautiful, detailed 3D fantasy worlds and you choose to play some shitty 20 year old game with sprites that look like something made in MS paint. Your loss.

Even stylized human beings don't map well to a 3D model. Manga-style girls just can't be represented in three-dimensional euclidean space. Look at how creepy kigurumi are.

That happened years ago, there are 100% photoreal characters in videogames. Unfortunately they're all in shitty AAA games that you wouldn't want to lose yourself in to begin with.

Why isn't your motivation to sound better than that other guy's?

I've played Heavy Rain, which is admittedly the best I've seen, and even that was a bit off at times.

Also, these photorealistic games tend to be short as hell 6-10 of gameplay.

Why not do a Genesis cover? The concept of a SNES arrangement was always weird to me since it never really had a distinct sound of its own. Just samples.
