Yeah, anything could be hidden under those robes.

And if even against my liking, her canon-stated anemia and bad health suggest she may be really thin and fragile.

But it's not like that couldn't be corrected by simply subjecting her to a high-calorie diet for a while.
A healthy lap needs to be soft enough to provide proper comfort for your head.

Sysadmin != programmer
If you're good at building computers, using regular programs, and most importantly figuring out what users want when they lie to you about what they want, you'll be a good sysadmin.

>> No.11692030

>>11691954
Learn how to Linux. Linux Linux Linux. And other UNIX like operating systems. That's what makes a sysadmin. I'm a programmer but I suck at Linux because I don't have the patience to memorize how to use a bunch of (what to me seem like) random and arbitrary commands. Therefore I can't do sysadmin type tasks. Programmer and Sysadmin are not the same thing at all.

>> No.11692051

>>11691864
Patchy would most definitely be a pure functional programmer, using only immutable data structures in her implementations, regardless of language. She would understand how to achieve this even when using more imperative languages, and would scoff at non-functional programs written by lesser mortals.

A good programmer usually also makes a good sysadmin. Sysadmin tasks are much easier if you can write supporting tools for menial and complicated tasks. Besides, a programmer usually has to understand a lot of the underlying operating system to effectively work with it, so he has great basic knowledge required by many sysadmin tasks.

In my humble opinion, a sysadmin is just a lesser form of a programmer. Or rather, his way to reaching Satori is longer.

Do them. Pick up a textbook, read the first chapter, do the exercises. If you can do them all easily, pick up another textbook. If you can't do them at all, figure out what you don't know and do that first.

Alternately, if you have a strong enough background, just to go to arxiv.org and do the same thing, but with research papers instead of textbooks.

What's a good textbook for someone struggling with high school maths? I need just enough to be able to learn college maths

>> No.11692610

>>11692562
By that I assume you mean "Calculus" and "Complex Analysis". I only have college-level recommendations for those, but the difference is really how rigorous the statements are, and whether proofs are provided.

I thought Fitzpatrick's "Advanced Calculus" was pretty decent, also C.H. Edwards Jr.'s "Advanced Calculus of Several Variables." I don't really know which one I would recommend to look at first, but they both give a very thorough understanding of Calculus. When I used it, some of my classmates mentioned that Edwards was a very dry textbook, but frankly, I suspect they skipped around and read sections without the precedents. This all leads up to Spivak, which is regarded as the "final boss" of undergraduate textbooks, and requires a bit more foundation in high-level algebra.

On the complex analysis front, the classic text is Churchill's "Complex Variables and Applications". I don't have too much to say about this except that there's absolutely no value to buying later editions.

These are undergraduate texts, so they're designed to teach their subjects to students who have passing familiarity with the rules/results and need to learn the foundations, but I think with the help of Wikipedia you can make your way far enough into them to do college level math.

No problem. By the way, if you don't already know it, wolframalpha.com is a very useful resource, kind of a cross between Mathematica and an online calculator. It's very useful for things like computing integrals (so you can check yourself while you're going through the rote exercises), and if you get stuck and shell out a few bucks, it shows you how to do the integral you give it, using methods that are actually appropriate for humans.
