There are probably craft fairs and markets that are similar in spirit to Comiket, but for things like ham radio and sewing.

Cartoons and comic books are nerdy so they attract the nerd crowd and the organizers market it towards those people. You could try to play your convention completely straight and functional, but those people will turn up anyway.
