A long time ago, Byakuren was a human who worked as Buddhist nun alongside her brother, Myouren. Her brother's sudden death caused her to fear death, and she immediately sought a way to remain young. While she managed to find a solution, this type of magic went against the Buddhist art that she had dedicated her life to.

No longer a human (fully, at least), she was no longer afraid of death, but now she was afraid of losing her power. Due to Gensokyo's nature, her magic would be lost if humanity rejected it. In order to hold on to her magic, she needed to ensure the security and longevity of youkai. She honored and protected the youkai in Gensokyo for her own benefit, making herself appear to be a great youkai exterminator. People looked up to her and no longer feared youkai.

After a while, Byakuren realized that the youkai faced struggles in the outside world, and decided to honestly help them, rather than do it to gain from it. At one point, she was sent to exterminate Minamitsu Murasa, the ghost famous for sinking ships. Instead of trying to exterminate her, Byakuren confronted the ghost as if she were a normal person. Murasa attempted to capsize the ship, but Byakuren rose from the water riding on top of a shining ship similar to the one Murasa fell from and drowned. By handing the ship over to Murasa, Byakuren freed her and earned Murasa's respect and gratitude.

Ichirin Kumoi and her nyuudou Unzan were also welcomed to join her, which they did. The two followed Byakuren and lived with her in Byakuren's temple, which was in the mountains. The temple was devoted to the god Bishamonten, and in order to gain the mountain youkai's trust, Byakuren appointed Shou to serve him. Shou proved to be an excellent choice, and the mountain youkai respected Byakuren.

Sadly, humans discovered that Byakuren was befriending youkai instead of doing her job as an exterminator. She was called a "demon in human form" and was sealed away in Makai for many years.
