Not OP, but seriously, why read them? They're as bad as fanfiction. At least erodoujins are just lewd fanart with words instead of "my totally original interpretation of what really happened".

Although there are doujinshi that aren't based on anything.

So?, several centuries have passed and people still gladly read Shakespeare's fanfiction.

And besides, in there are different elements you can admire in such kind of works, like the drawings themselves or the literary prowess of the author. And having a history told with images is great (Not always of course).
