oh god i know that feeling. i was playing through ran route today on 5 star, i started off working my way towards east japan, and managed to get all the youkai commanders after many reloads and attempts at fighting off 5 attacks + trying to capture their commanders, but then shimazu fucked me over by taking over mouri which i planned on taking over the whole time. started all over again, wasted so much time and effort. you have to plan ahead of what you're going to do if you want a good game with lots of points at the end

points deteriorate as turns go by. the higher the difficulty settings, the more points your start off with. Conquering and clearing women gives you points. There are also missions you can do to get more points, and you can find them by clicking system info.

your total points is just your highest score, you'll need to beat it to actually get more. the exception is every unique route you clear is an extra +5 points

I find rance gets REALLY repetitive, especilly :

-Farming dungeons for...bones or whatever the hell it is you use to buy stuff from the item shop

-Dungeons are also really boring even without the farming

-Clearinng characters

-Getting affection points not just to clear characters but to upgrade tehm

-Dragging wars out as much as possible to capture prisoners for happy pokkuris

-Trying to do everything as quick as possible to get a high score or avoid the lame alicesoft time limits present in all their games

-Most battes are unchallenging, even on higher difficulty levels they rely on unfair advantages to be hard (such as a ridiculous number of footmen)

I think I replayed it about four times. I stopped when I unlocked the Takeda house bonus. That took me literally forever. Farmed one last spot on the map and waited for the last general to make an appearance in battle.

You basically need to survive for about five to ten turns after the demon army appears, as far as I remember. After that, some more story kicks in, and their army will be weakened substantially. If you need to regain territory, Battle Permits will help you. Then focus your assault in western direction.

for any of the routes except kill the monkey, you just have to focus on defence at the end. if you take over too many territories of the demon army or shimazu army, you just start to lose some and make no progress.

You get points in a run even for clearing previously cleared characters. You can also clear generics, and it's usually a good idea to recruit any high-level ones you can find.

5* + 29 character clears + 29 * End game points + All objectives cleared in ~65 turns or so. Also grab any events that give points, like the traveling carnival events in Owari, if you can.

Oh I should also mention that two of the key elements to getting a high score are:

1) Using permits ASAP. You can probably get a permit on Shibata Katsuie by turn 12 or earlier.

2) Getting an early Action textbook 2 for Rance. You need it to duel Inukai.

on 5 star i actually caught a footsoldier with 800 troops in prison on turn 5. i spent 8k gold to give him 1k troops, and the rest of my money on daidouji komatsu to get 1k troops. i saved myself a lot of action fans

Just because I am a performance and perfection fanatic, I have found that these settings work optimally, or at least appeal to my OCD:

- Enable SSE use. All modern processors support several forms of it.
- Disable reduction of CPU usage will force a constant 100% usage of one of your processor cores, but also ensures constant game performance.
- "Use multimedia timer" is useful as it allows timers to execute sounds with graphics in accurate synchronization.
- Disabled all sound settings. I don't believe any of them are useful at all if you have a dedicated soundcard.

It's classic Rance so it's worth a playthrough if you're already a fan. The combat is pretty dull and some of the puzzles are retarded and don't make sense. You'll probably have to resort to checking the wiki at least a few times to advance. Unless you grew up on and enjoy that old school cryptic as hell adventure game stuff anyway.

the one thing i really didnt like about sengoku rance was that a lot of the characters are the same in battle and are basically just some generic commanders with special portraits.

i would've liked to see some special abilities added to commanders like masamune, ran, and kanami.
