I'll tell you what happened. Translating VNs is a ton of fucking work, and the people translating them got burned out. Several years ago there were a few high-profile VNs translated, people got excited about the medium, and for a while everyone and their brother wanted to translate VNs. A few of them, like Ixrec, actually went on to release something. But most didn't because, as it turns out, translating VNs is a ton of fucking work. And now the craze has died down, and no new translators have joined the scene because translating VNs is a ton of fucking work and there's not much reward in it. Anime or manga is a much better choice in terms of work/reward ratio. Even Ixrec is finally getting burned out and I expect sooner or later he'll leave the scene officially, or maybe go on an indefinite hiatus like TakaJun. After that happens, there will be no one left because everyone now realizes that translating VNs is a ton of fucking work.

Bottom line: if you like VNs and want to keep playing them, you'd better start doing your reps now.

To be frank, I don't think that translating scenario-ge will ever be commercially viable. The market for adult games in the West is too small, the cost of a decent translation is too high, and there's too much piracy. I'm honestly amazed MangaGamer hasn't fully given up on non-nukige yet. Maybe they see them as loss leaders or something. JAST can probably keep going for as long as they can keep paying fan translators a pittance to use their work.

>> No.11544573

>>11544468
But, based on statistics, the most popular eroge on the west are non-nukige, also the most popular VN on vndb has almost the same votes of the most popular on EGS; for a public that relies mainly on fan-translations I think it's not a small quantity. And translators are supposed to get paid by word, then again I don't know how it's done with Japanese. Why do you think it's not commercially viable to translate scenarioge?

Popular among the small group of enthusiasts on the Internet that are almost exclusively pirates anyway does not equate to high sales. Long, story-heavy games take many months to translate even at Ixrec speeds. Now factor in licensing costs, distribution costs, programming, testing, marketing, support. We're talking about games that would be lucky to break 1000 sales and go for $40 a pop. It doesn't add up. Nukige are cheap to license, are typically short and fast to translate, and they actually sell. It's no surprise MG pumps out so many of them. It's the only way they can stay afloat.

Cross Channel retranslation released. Need to install the Amaterasu patch, then run a python 2.7 script to install the new patch on top of that.

I think the decline in translators came about because with the translator boom that followed mirror moon and whatnot going on back then, people interested in VNs saw that they could just wait and go about their lives as most worthwhile VNs got translated. Now that those translators are dying out, the next generation doesn't have as many people to replace them. Combine that with the fact that those who do read VNs untranslated now have ended up in something of a disdain for translation, and...

>Combine that with the fact that those who do read VNs untranslated now have ended up in something of a disdain for translation

I wouldn't say that. I just think it's silly to wait years for a translation if you can learn Japanese in a fraction of that time. It shouldn't even be a question if you really care about VNs as a hobby. Relying on translations is only accepatble when you are a casual consument of a medium.

>> No.11560544

>>11560530
I agree with you, but there's a pervasive sentiment that things are ruined by having been translated and it's not entirely in jest.

Do people seriously think this way? If you know Japanese then good for you, but don't even try to pretend it's somehow the easier option. Most of us don't have nearly the time or discipline for that shit.

>> No.11560558

>>11560544

Which isn't entirely wrong considering most translations are piss poor. Of course, there are also exceptions but they are really few and far between.

You can fix that.

>> No.11560561

>>11560559
Not really. It's easy to be disciplined for a couple of weeks, it's hard to keep it up without faltering for a year or more, all the while knowing you're not going to be able to do jack shit with this for a long time. If I were able to motivate myself that easily I wouldn't be in a position to read VNs all day in the first place.

>> No.11560566

>>11560555

As I said, you should only do it if you care enough about VNs as a hobby. But it's okay if you just like to read VNs casually.

But: you can learn basic Japanese in 100 hours. If you have enough time to post on /jp/, then you have enough time to learn Japanese.

>> No.11560581

>>11560530
>only acceptable when you are a casual consumer of a medium
Most people who say they like VNs are. These threads are interesting because they're filled with people that care enough about the medium to actively visit a weekly thread about their translations, but don't care enough about them to do their reps. It's almost like a form a tsundere. I-It's not like I really enjoy VNs that much or anything. D-Don't get the wrong idea! I-It's just that, if one happens to get translated I might read it. That's all! They're definitely not worth learning a foreign language for."

>> No.11560590

>>11560581
Yeah, I mean I like VNs but I tend to read them in phases then go off and spend months do other things and not touching VNs at all. If VNs were my only hobby I'd probably go learn Japanese quickly since I'd run out of material fast otherwise.

Though I'd almost be more motivated to learn for all the fun looking JRPGs I'll never get to play otherwise.

>> No.11560624

>easy to be disciplined for a couple of weeks, it's hard to keep it up without faltering for a year or more
1. It takes about month to get habit formed. If you keep doing your reps daily for 3-4 weeks, it will become norm for you and will not stress you at all.
2. If you need more than 6 months to learn enough moon to read VNs, you are retarded and should go watch hollywood shit or play dota instead.

As someone who's worked on a game for 5 months full-time and has been waiting for 16 months (and counting) for the business side of things to get shit together and actually release the damn game, I can understand where the translator is coming from. Investing a lot of time and effort into something only to have it remain unreleased because of people who quite frankly don't care nearly as much about the project as you do can really crush your motivation.

At least I can play the game I made, I guess for translation you don't even have that.
