What do you call it when an author creates one well-recieved work of fiction, then spends the rest of their career trying to make lightning strike twice to no avail?

I mean, other than "being Tom Clancy."

Regardless of your personal opinion on any of Ryukishi's works, both Higurashi and Umineko were very well-received, well enough for the both of them to receive anime adaptations. You could argue that he's failing to make lightning strike thrice, but he already has two established successes.

Tom Clancy is a summer reading type of author.

R07 is above that. He makes good pieces of fiction with good setting concepts and characters and that's it.

One hit wonders only happen if an author makes something interesting and never becomes relevant within the zeitgeist of the medium.

Tom Clancy was always read and known within the popcorn literature culture so I don't really see the point you're making.

/jp/ is conceptually unable to see greatness even when it's in front of it. They see a masterpiece like Umineko and can only think:

``Too complicated story guy I didn't understand anything :(''

Followed by:

``Ryukishi hates us he has said he hates the retards so he hates us''

Of course, nobody make the logical conclusion than, if Ryukishi has stated that he dislikes retards, and the fellow /jp/ anon feels concerned, then that means he thinks he's a retard himself.

Sometimes, there's not even a try:

``It's SHIT, Ryuikshi has stolen everything from Then There Were None!!!!''

And, of course, the:

``Rosa is the killer because I said so I have no proof it's not even barely logical but I want to believe!''

Every single one of these opinions were professed in Umineko threads since the beginning of time.

There is a strong hate against Yasu, because the fellow /jp/ anon feels that a freakshow, incest child, who was emasculated then raised as an orphan and a slave to the family he should rightfully order around has no right to be resentful.

Then, of course, there's the always popular:

``How can Shannon/Kanon not have been found by his employers?!!! Plothole, PLOTHOLE!!''

Which mean, of course, they never tried to answer the actually awfully easy question: who was the employer of Yasu? You know. Yasu's employer, Yasu. Maybe Yasu did get a memo about the Shannon/Kanon situation and sat on it because he didn't want to hurt Yasu's feeling? Maybe Yasu corrupted Yasu somehow? Guys, I don't have any idea!

I'm being sarcastic, by the way.

Yeah, but they never finished Umineko's anime and yet Higurashi still gets OVA releases.

But I then again, Chiru was convoluted as a 50 hour novel. Could even the masters at Studio DEEN pull off an adaptation that made the slightest bit of sense with only thirteen hours?

I'm not someone who complains about plotholes, but they do confuse me.

Like the two bottles supposedly signed by Maria that contained ep1-2. To start, they could only have been written by Yasu. (You need to know who can do what, else it wouldn't even be near the truth). It also must have been after she found the gold.

So why would Yasu finding the gold make her write mystery novels about the island? You don't write murder plans in mystery format. You don't write fake murder mystery plays in mystery format either. You only write mystery format for readers to solve a mystery.

This all tells me that the real events on the island consisted of the following: 1) Battler arrives, 2) Shannon says "Hey, try and solve this mystery story I made!", 3) Battler tries to solve it but he can't, 4) Eva looks at them and says she solved it, 5) Battler asks to try again but Eva puts them in bottles and throws them into the sea, 6) Massive arguments starts between parents and everyone dies.

It is the only logical thing based on those bottles and mystery stories.

There's nothing redeeming about them. The plot isn't good, the art isn't good, the character's aren't good.

Higanbana was fairly good. Not great like a WtC, but it's a breather work with lot of morals, some very good characters, and all in one an enjoyable story.

I personally believe Ryukishi left Umineko mentally exhausted and wanted to write a small and easy story for a while. It doesn't have a big scope, but it works as it is.

Too bad it apparently didn't sell in Eleven Lands. RGD sells a hundred time better than Higanbana for some reasons.

It was a rhetorical question. You write mystery for a reader to solve it. A mystery not read by anyone is a pretty pointless mystery.

That means Yasu had someone in mind to read the stories, and seemingly that would be Battler, since Battler was inserted as the detective.

(Unless Yasu was completely insane and wrote mystery for his other personas)

They are NOT answer arcs. Explicitly not. Higurashi had 'question arcs' followed by 'answer arcs'. 'Kai' meant 'answer'. Umineko's four question arcs are followed by 'Chiru', which means 'breakdown'. Chiru are NOT answer arcs. They are breakdown arcs, where the story is broken down and the meta-context is explained extensively.
