What do you think of the Japanese obsession with vending machines? Is there actually a reason for them to be selling all sorts of things that aren't beverages/snacks or toys?

There is no obsession. There really are not that many non-food/drink vending machines in Japan. Some believing the sensationalist media.

I wish more stuff here would be sold via vending machines. I'm always forced order things online because i'm too scared going into a shop for clothings, shoes or medical stuff. I'm still wearing the stuff my mom bought my 6 years ago and it's slowly fucking up.

They can get curry rice in their vending machines. Truly that is paradise. Also, vending machines mean they don't have to hire the browns.

I can see it too now. That's actually a very good reason.

Non Food/Drink machines are really short in supply and are usually in cheap hotels or travel hotspots.

With that said, regular vending machines are eons ahead of American vending machines.

I found them really convenient. Very handy for buying cold CC Lemon after drinking too much Strong Zero the night before.

Far cheaper to go to a super and buy things though.

so much this! some grocery stores near me recently got self checkout machines, so I find myself buying groceries more often. Usually late at night or in the wee hours of the morning.

Sometimes the attendant ruins it by being overly professional and insisting on greeting me and telling me to have a nice day.

And once or twice I made it all the way out to the parking lot before remembering to actually pay, so I walked back into the store and paid. But it was very nervous-making to almost steal.

I worked in a store for a short time and was always thinking a machine could do it probably better and faster. Then they kicked me out because being too introverted. So the point of having people there is smiling, saying hello and bye.
