Because yeah, extracting scripts (takes about 10 hours if game is heavily encrypted, otherwise maximum 4-5 hrs) is most complex part of translation process, not the translation itself (takes 1-2 years).

You've never done any real debugging before, have you? A small byte shift, a single character, an extra byte of file size can ruin the whole thing. I will concur in that translation does take time, but once you have your hands on a script and if you really are a competent translator, then you should have no real "problems" other than keep translating.

A hacker and debugger's job might take less time, but the time and effort mulling over some crappy coded engine by some incompetent Japanese coder that thought using different encodings and enforcing them for different parts of the resource files would be genius, is the incomparable thing in my opinion. They're just two different worlds.

>> No.11507252

I do reverse-engineering (debugging is different thing, you are confused) both professionally and for various fantl teams.
Things you talk about are trivial if you actually know what you are doing.
Only "real" hard part of vn hacking is encryption, and even it isn't that hard, just annoying to replicate properly.

As I said, only difference between professional engineer and professional translator is that first invests about 40 hours in worst case, and second invests 1000+ hours.

I feel like that really only applies to platforms where established tools for reverse engineering and knowledge is common...

Working on Playstation game right now, I feel like I got lucky because most of my game was done in bytecode, which made it extremely helpful to just change some files' to get text to work and etc. But I am stuck currently on getting the game's text backlog, which crashes with my current modifications, and none of the bytecode points to a problem. So my worst fear is actually reading MIPS code and then trying to figure out what shit does what on a non-PC platform.
