As a white guy who went over there with only really really basic Japanese, BULLSHIT.

On my first day in class (student exchange program), girls were already all over me before I even opened my mouth. I'm a really average guy by North American standards and was a virgin before going to Japan. I came back a year later and I had fucked over 10 (and it would have been more but I got a girlfriend during that time so I was almost exclusive with her).

I was basing my opinion off of the Japanese women of Japanese women giving men the shaft in the U.S. In my experience they are much more exclusive while staying in the states. Kind and sweet, but not ones to go sleeping around. This might be because those Japanese girls coming over may generally be better people or morally just. I have no idea the social implications that Japan manifests to have young moral girls coming to the States to study, but it might have to do with that they're degrees have them working with gaijin so that they can one day personally escape Japan in the mind set of "I must stay pure so that I can attract a quality gaijin for marriage outside of Japan".

After all one of the basic wants of all fathers for their daughter's marriages is for her to be a virgin for a suitor so that she will have a stable life. By protecting her virginity she may bond easier with one man physically, no threat of carrying diseases to stop birthing in carrying out lineage, and be emotionally attached to only the husband in loyalty. These just may be underlying reasons deep within such a Japanese girl studying abroad in hopes of finding a gaijin to marry in her job back in Japan.

Every time I meet or speak with non-whites coming back from Japan they're always enthralled with how everyone is so kind in Japan and how excepting they were of them. I have met, on rare occasion, some non-whites/non-asian travelers to Japan that insist that they are part of the nation Japan now and they were excepted saying "Have you even been to Japan? How would you know if you've never been to Japan?!" The fact that they are always pushing the idea that they have become part of Japan and flaunting it around that they've lived among them shows how insecure they really are about their status in Japan. One doesn't have to live amongst a nation to figure out their beliefs and social norms, it helps tremendously to, but not a requirement.

The fact is that putting on a second face of politeness is how Japan survives being a large island nation. For up until the 1940's Japanese people lived within one town or spot their entire lives. They would see everyone in those towns for their entire lives, so to upset any balance in that community would turn the whole town on head causing havoc. So the Japanese would never be able to speak what they really thought of another person, else that relationship would further escalate into worse and worse throughout their lives. Some Japanese scholars even theorize/contribute mass riots, revolts, and clan rivalries to small isolated incidents of letting this so called second mask come off between two peoples or small groups.


The Japanese are two faced and will always be polite to avoid conflict within their tiny communities on the Islands, but never truly express their true feelings about you unless persistently directly asked (even then that is a taboo). They speak amongst themselves in private in spike of the gaijin that are not white.


Unless you are really willing to live your entire life surrounded by lies and false friendships living with in Japan, I suggest you not permanently live there.

I think Japan will change when it comes to integration and everything but not in our lifetime at least. My Dad is actually half -Japanese but I highly doubt that means anything. In our now globalized world we have the tendency to go to other countries and feel at home as if they were our own people. It's always been like this in travelers, but because we have better means of traveling faster more frequently other countries, like Japan, are not as welcoming to outsiders as they might have been in, say, 1890 or later. Well, you can get Japanese nationality at least. I imagine I'm not the only person here on /jp/ whose only real connection to their homeland is their parents and their passport. Apart from the internet, Japan is the only place I have any cultural affiliation to. It's either here or nowhere for me.
