Sai keeps freezing whenever it's file viewer is used, so I can't save or load. I tried looking this up and all I get is to uninstall and reinstall, but I never technically installed it in the first place (cracked/portable version?). It has worked fine for over a year, so I'm really confused. I tried another portable version but it froze as well.

Okay. I used to frequent /jp/, but drifted away, and was brought back this weekend over the whole 'weaponized' bit. Whatever.

Seeing this thread, I was surprised to see the call for even programming OC, and thought I'd post this.

I've been working since late June on a system that automatically draws out text from raw manga scans, making that info available for further processing.
I've passing these found text regions to Tesseract OCR (with some tweaking) and getting some medium quality text extracted from hundreds of pages of manga.
It's all pretty quirky, and needs months more of work.

Note here I'm _NOT_ talking about auto-translation, which is another problem. I'm more interested in this sort of thing to do auto-lookup of Kanji for me before I read.

I'm not that person, but SAI has a lot of features that are nice for simple line-art. Easy access one button canvas horizontal flip, easy access rotation, layer clear with a single hotkey, a nice pen tool that doesn't require a bunch of mucking around with the brush to simulate a pen easier color blending (just my personal opinion). Plus it's also lighter on your system and loads instantly where PS (depending on what you have installed) can take a little bit.

It's really not a weeb thing, SAI is very convenient.

Angular contours can't be helped due to resolution, but you should do something about it.

The point is that you don't have to go manually set all of it in SAI. Obviously you can do pretty much anything in PS you can do in any other painting program if you take the time to set preferences up, modify brush settings, etc.

But if you're just doing a simple line-art drawing there's no reason to go through all of that when there's already a lightweight program that is well designed for it, without all the excess needless (for that drawing) features and clutter that PS has.

Also I can't tell you how amazing it is to just hit "d" and clear a layer. Since in photoshop you have to bind to <ctr+key>, and 'clear' doesn't work without a selection, which means you have to ctrl+a, ctrl+e (the bind I use for clear in PS), and ctrl+d to deselect.

It makes SAI wonderful for quick sketches when just practicing.

Go to /ic/ and look around there for tips and read the sticky. One thing you need to understand first is that art isn't necessarily hard, but it is a lot of work. Chances are you wont see improvement in a long time.

But I would say DnB is a pretty good starting genre. It's more focused on sound design, and the speed generally means less complex melodies which is nice when starting off. (Unless you are looking to make liquid DnB then the melody > bass)

You can also build the song off a break / multiple breaks which serves as a nice starting point for a song too

Well one thing he taught me that will help me stay dedicated is I don't make mistakes, just happy accidents.
So anyway I thought chen would be an easy thing to try to replicate for practice and started to draw happy little chens. And I ended up making nothing but happy mistakes.

Unless you wanna end up like an average DA user, the best would be to try a normal pencil on average paper. The advanced tools are already there and won't learn anything; it is you who has to learn how to do things.

Not at all. If anything, it hinders it. You might actually get really good at it in some time and do impressive stuff in its own way, but it still won't be drawing at all; tracing is to drawing what guitar hero is to playing guitar. On the other hand, imitating stuff you admire, in order to understand and assimilate techniques and styles, can prove very enhancing of your drawing abilities.

The image is what the sound file looks like when playing (you'll just see numbers change as you click here and there); this example is like the equivalent of a very basic loop on FL but without the fancy graphics, just the programming interface (though you can insert several specific scripts, if you want, to make it more user friendly). In any case, Pd is essentialy much more powerful, since it admits multimedia and only uses precisely the resources you need; you can, for example, write (or rather, "draw") a program in which you can generate and mix audio on the flow, while displaying a video file that overlaps with your webcam signal in real time at variable transparency rate and projects it all over the inside and outside walls of a rotating cube (no joke, I've seen such exercises before). The point is to make it all from scratch and so have complete freedom at it (and a better understanding of the process).

Thanks I've been trying to learn 3D to better grasp depth in a 2D environment. I was currently trying to model a basic mesh I could reference for more slim looking characters. I agree that exploring is part of the fun. The atmosphere is a big part of my enjoyment of Yume Nikki, so exploring wasn't really a chore. Hell in particular appealed to my autism so I ended up mapping it with pen and paper for fun. Most of my drawings had people just standing upright, so I figured this time I'd draw someone sitting. Poses like this is pretty typical for Kanako. I'm not too happy with both her left hand and her left leg, they look kind of awkward. Some of the lines are too prominent where they shouldn't be, too. They're pretty much a single uniform thickness, I should work on that.

Still though, I'm pretty happy with this one, no huge glaring missteps like my last few drawings.
