Put on a fedora, trenchcoat, and a pair of aviator sunglasses
Channel your latent bushido spirit and start swinging it around
Take photos and post them online

Or just put it away because having one makes you look like a weeaboo dumbass. If you want to train yourself in kendo, use one of these or you'll just hurt yourself.

It probabbly isn't high quality then. It probably couldn't even chop through bone without breaking, but I still wouldn't volunteer as a test subject. Katanas made outside of Japan and mass produced won't put up any real fight against anything, idk who you would be fighting anyway. A sold ripp off of a katana that will be higher quality is going to fetch you from any where near $400 - $1000 imported from China. There are American craftsmen who are blacksmith swordsman, but you're looking at a few grand to buy from them. Even then they might not sell you one unless you are Secind Don or higher.

Very few of them ever were of high quality. Bows are the superior battlefield weapon. Katana were mass produced in order for the wielders to have several backups.

You know why they folded the steel? Because of the amazing ton of impurities found in Japanese iron. That fancy word used for the steel used by ancient katana crafters? The Europeans called that "pig iron". Look it up.

Modern katanas are made with superior steel and are sturdier, but very useless in a battle when everyone else in the world knows about rifles and tanks.

It's a show piece. Mount it on the wall and enjoy the nice gift of decoration.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much worse than that. Much, much worse than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 120 Yen (that's about $1) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can't even cut wooden boards with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce some of the biggest pieces of shit known to mankind.

Katanas are barely half as sharp as European swords and half as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can't cut through at all. I'm pretty sure a katana would break trying to cut a knight wearing full plate with any kind of slash.

Ever wonder why feudal Japan never bothered conquering Europe? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Knights and their Oakeshott types X through XXII of destruction. Even in World War II, Japanese soldiers targeted the men with the mamelukes first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the worst sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require worse stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d4 Damage
x2 Crit
-2 to hit and damage
Can never count as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d6 Damage
x2 Crit
-1 to hit and damage
Can never count as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do much less in d20, see my new stat block.

Wallhangers aren't made from 1095 carbons steel core with 1065 wrapping it, folded, sharpened, and differentially hardened.
Wallhangers also don't cut 3 stalks of bamboo tied together.
This one does.
Blade is from dynasty forge, the Tsuka, Tsuba, Seppa and Saya were all bought from different places.
Kind of a custom fit.

Pretty much this. All those ultra-sharp edo period katana have all something in common: They were barely used in actual combat. It was nothing more than a status symbol for the bushi caste. Take a sengoku katana which was actually made for battle and all those katana enthusiasts would be heavily disappointed.

To be fair, Europeans also used pattern welding and folded their swords at least until the invention of the blast furnace. After that they were able to create good mono steel so they could make swords with the same quality without all the annoying processes.

>> No.11429489

As someone who actually knows about nihontou, I don't care to read through the thread.

If you intend on actually using it, then you should be doing iaido. If you do iaido then you will be training with a wooden sword for a few of years until your rank up. Then an aluminum sword. It's not like kendo, there is no combat or competition like kendo.

If you can't muster that kind of dedication you're a danger to yourself and those around you. Or you could just hang it up on the wall. Either way, you need to oil it and put it away for the time being.

Even if you do take up iaido, and get to the actual cutting part you need a sword up to the task made of medium or high carbon steel and not stainless bullshit. Differential hardening, folded, layered is all nice in theory but it just adds to the cost and was historically done because labor was cheaper than steel. During the Tokugawa period, katanas weren't even used and how fancy your sword was was just a pissing contest.

As far as sharpening it. You don't. You will mess up the kissaki and the polish without the skill and experience to do it right. I own hundreds of dollars of sharpening stones and I don't even use them on swords, they're for knives. Amassing an appropriate collection of stones for swords can easily costs thousands.

You don't even know what kenjutsu means.

Outside of Japan battou fall under the school of Iaido. Iaido is basically the kata school of swordsmanship, and kendo the sparring school.
