I, too, enjoy Kendo and some of the Japanese martial arts, but I live in the backwaters of nowhere and thus there's no place nearby that teaches anything of interest.

I also find it amusing that so much of daily life is ritualized, especially in the language. Having greeting rituals for different times of day? Not really my style, but of great academic interest to me, especially now that I'm trying to learn the language (tackling kana atm).

I'm familiar with the very basics and learning kana right now. Just need to sit down and start using it tbh, but I'm dreading Kanji and memorizing particles. I followed the advice in an old news post and picked to Japanese for Busy People (kana vers) and the Kana workbook from that series, so that should be a good start; tried a couple lessons on MP3 but it seems like I need to see the word written to pronounce it correctly.

That said, I pick up languages pretty quickly. Japanese seems to be fairly easy grammatically, and it's just going to be time consuming to get through learning it. Luckily I have 2ch, anime (for listening practice only) and online newspapers to help with that.

Do it. I just got started at the club at my college, its great exercise and a lot of fun (well, the training parts aren't really fun, but sparring and shit is.) Plus, its the only sport where you get points for MANLY YELLING.

>too unhealthy/girly/lazy to look into it at this point.

Actually it wouldn't hurt just going over and checking it out. If you think you can't do kendo because first you need to go jogging and stuff to get in better shape then it won't happen. Try doing it in reverse.

Also kendo is more of the explosive sport.

tl;dr: DO IT FAGGOT

I'm aware of the time investment involved. A professor advised me a couple days ago that it took him a year to learn enough Kanji to read a Chinese newspaper, and that was at a pace of 5 Kanji/day. That said, it's just going to be a matter of sitting down and doing it, just like anything else. If nothing else, I'm very confident in my learning abilities, so like I said it's just going to be time consuming for me.

>> No.445

It seems like a good time to share a story with you /jp/.

I fence, a sad hobby for a 23 year old but im pretty good at it and I stay fit. Anyway the place I normally do it at also does kendo. One day for laughs I challenge a someone at about my level, I wore kendo protection gear and he wore fencing gear.

The result was thus, kendo swords are fucking slow, I landed a hit and had withdrawn before he could do shit. Only in the third fight did I even have to parry. He did win a few times however once he got used to the difference in style.
