Assuming the upper torso is misshapen because this is SnK fanart, and the titans are all oddly shapen, you seem to have trouble decided where your light source is actually coming from.

Well, it's not SnK-fanart. Mostly because I don't like that series.
However, is the torso really that far off? Except some of the neck and the collarbone, also the back muscles, I couldn't really make out any severe faults - Then again, he is just supposed to be training area for coloring. Anyways, is there something I failed to notice?
But you're asolutely right about the light source. I tried to shade with it in mind, but it didn't really work out as planned. It's supposed to be on the undrawn left hand (right hand from our perspective).

You're doing this with Qt?

What kind of performance do you get? What archives do you support?

>> No.11400055

>>11399975
Yeah, Qt. I haven't really done any performance testing yet, but It definitely suffers when viewing very large images (ie - 3000 x 5000); resizing becomes choppy and memory shoots up to around 70-80mb. Once I figure that out, it should run pretty well. Oh yeah, some file IO stuff still needs to be put in a separate thread.

It supports 7z, zip, and rar, but my implementation is really shitty so I'm going to rewrite it at some point. Right now I have a 7z executable in the application directory which I call through the shell. It works for now but I'm looking for a decent, cross-platform C++ library that can read from 7z, zip and rar files and write to 7z and zip files.

>Summary
I've hacked it together to get it to a working state and will try to improve performance once I finish all the fundamental stuff (ie - zooming, double-page view, file operations).

>> No.11400101

>>11400055
Generate jpeg previews of all images you import above a certain size. Unless you zoom there is no reason to have all pixels unpacked. Considering the size of screen resolutions you will never need all pixels at once so split them up into low memory tiles and texture it over your mesh/quad if you want pixel precise zooming, that or stream it bit by bit, and use low resolution placeholders until done.

It's an age old problem.

>> No.11400190

>>11400101
Thanks. Since I don't have that many large images, I'll probably wait until after I fix the archiver stuff before I work on that.

On a semi-related note, maybe you could help me with this problem:

>Let's say there is a temporary director, "temp".
>There are also several instances of the application running at once.
>The contents of temp should be cleared when the application finishes
>the problem is that it should only be cleared if there is only one instance currently running (ie - no other instance is using temp)

This is because if the application crashes, it doesn't delete its temporary files, so I figured having the last instance clean everything up might be a solution.

>> No.11400227

>>11400190
If you want to solve it with just a simple program then you can let each instance generate a unique session ID and make sub-folders for each, or list them in a text or database file. Then remove the temp folder associated with the session, or toggle it off, or remove it from the file. Eventually you have no active sessions so then you can clear everything.

Probably a better approach related to your other problem is to organize your application around a client-server architecture. I assume the purpose of your archive browser is to quickly and effectively browse the images in an archive. You can "import" archives and generate all the thumbnails and lowres previews in one go. Then it makes more sense to handle instances as sessions and you can either leave all previews unpacked or only unpack them when requested, and then clean up when the server decides to so. If you do it that way it's easier to co-ordinate different sessions and, for example, leave recently or regularly viewed previews unpacked.

It's going to be a comic viewer, so pretty much. Forgive my ignorance as I'm still in the learning stages of non-trivial application development, but I just want to make sure I understand this correctly:

>Run one instance of the application
>when a file is opened, create a new window in a separate thread as a "session"
>the main thread manages all the background details and communication

Am I getting that right?

>> No.11400405

>>11400339
It depends on how you want to do it, but I think having one instance with multiple handles would be cumbersome. You can just do your temp folder idea and do it like this:

1. Start application.
2. Look for sessions.txt
3. If it doesn't exist create it and add "session_id1" otherwise add "session_id"+number not yet used.

Then when you close:
4. Remove instance's session_id from sessions.txt.
5. If sessions.txt has no more sessions then clean up your temp files.

Alternatively if you build it as a server then you start the server, it listens for client requests and handles all the gritty gritty on behalf of the client, and serves the image data. This means your client can be anything that can display images and communicate with your server. An html browser, flash, binary executable, whatever.

You can do a hybrid approach of the two where a main thread acts like a server but then you have a lot more implementation details to worry about.

>> No.11400491

Which is a hint why these things are usually made like client-server applications.

So running with the naive no-server example...

If you let one instance act as a head with multiple nodes then if that head goes down you either deactivate all nodes or you promote one of the other nodes to the new head.

Alternatively if you have nodes act like distributed peers then you can continually update some check value and the node that doesn't conform is down so it gets removed from the list.

>> No.11400514

>>11400484
Timestamp works fine if you continually update it for each session. Then it becomes trivial to detect a session that hasn't responded for some time threshold. The problem with that is that now if a client crashes and then you close the application you don't know the other client crashed so you do no cleanup. But you can fix that problem by also having an immediate response requested flag so then you can assume it's a dead session at timeout if it doesn't respond.

>> No.11400540

>>11400514
Thanks for all the help. To be honest, I think I'm going to stick with the simple approach for now since this temp directory issue is the only problem I'm really facing in terms of coordinating through instances. If I find that it ends up being too limited or if I decide to make the application more heavy-duty (ie - indexed library), I'll probably switch over to that model, though.

>>11400491
>you don't know the other client crashed so you do no cleanup

The advice I gave in the image is true and I'm definitely in the position of giving people tips, not ordering them around. It's up to them to decide what to do with to them since anime itself is a stylization. The original artist wanted help, so I gave him just that.

If you can tell what's deviantart tier shit and non-deviantart tier shit, you must have a good experienced eye for art. Care to share your profound views?

Not same dude but the saturation and contrast levels in your 'redline' is incorrect. If it's snowing, the amount of particles in the air make a fog or mist. This is why the colors are less saturated; colors lose their saturation as they approach white.

Since it's anime art, I went for (a now less rushed) saturation since it stands out more. Your typical anime artist honestly wouldn't care for authenticity, man. You can't deny that. They only care what looks nice to them. Even if it means adding a shit ton of white spots like Rella.
With that aside, I highly appreciate your recommendation and your honest criqute in which I see no wrong to that.

>>11401820
Yea, you're right. I do find brighter colors in anime to look better so I passively add them. The original picture is still faded though.

I've said enough, I'll just be going in circles now. My only real sin is not adding multiple examples in the 1st place.

I switched to the big 12x9 monoprice from a bamboo. It's definitely a huge upgrade in terms of quality, the pressure response is super smooth, and the tracking feels far less jittery (although that might be just due to the size difference). The pen is a little bit heavy, especially if you draw mostly with your wrist, as I do, but it's not really a big deal, you get used to it. I would probably still go with an intuos if I could actually afford it, but if you're on a budget and it's bamboo vs monoprice, definitely go with monoprice.

Really the only problem with monoprice is the drivers, you might run into some problems with them and you can't do stuff like customizing the pressure curve, which is quite annoying because the pen feels pretty hard even at the softest setting, but you can compensate for that with custom brushes so it's not a big problem.

Though I was told at the time of the project's inception that I'd have a translator, minimum two other artists and a way to release it on consignment at C80. Accepting furrybux is profitable but I'd never do it, I can barely deal with the stuff /d/ patrons ask for. They'll always ask based on what they know you to create, so if you just draw cute 2hus, that's all you'll have to draw. If you've EVEN ONCE drawn something lewd, that's all you'll ever be asked for. It finally got here after a gay delay but it's time for a quick review! Huion is basically a cheap Chinese knock-off of the intous 5 without the touch ring, radial menus, and touch feature—but it's fucking awesome for the price. Here are the notable differences I noticed compared to the intous at first glance:

-buttons are better than first generation intous 5 soft buttons (which I hated) but are still shitty
-I'm not a fan of the feel of the drawing surface
-there is a ruler up at the top for no apparent reason
-the rest of the tablet's finish looks cheap as expected from the Chinese
-the pen holder does not have a hole in it like the intuos and rests on its side

The pen holder is also a piece of crap and when I opened it they only supplied you with 4 extra nibs with the other 4 holes—where nibs are supposed to be like what wacom provides—are missing. Installing was a little confusing but I got it the 2nd attempt. If you are a forgettable person then the pen that comes with this will be your worst enemy; you turn it on/off by pushing the eraser end and no the eraser end is not actually an eraser like the intuos pen. T-they were nice of you to give you a free AAA battery, though! The cable is detachable and the buttons (not like you would want to use the side buttons) are reprogrammable but they were gay enough to have little icons engraved in the buttons for the defaults, making it undesirable to use anyway. I got the nostromo to fix this problem.

But none of the extra 'features' matter because all I care about is the pressure sensitivity, which Wacom's bamboo line of products can't beat. Bamboo create, at a retail price of $174.95 at this time, has 1024 levels while Huion H610 has 2048. It's a good beginners tablet and trumps bamboo (and the newer intuos) but it's not as sexy as anything wacom makes. By the way...intous is the new bamboo and "intuos" is now called intuos 5 pro without the bullshit.

Yiynova user here, I'll caution you now about stylus with AAA batteries:

Rechargable batteries:
You feel the battery dying. Pen pressure starts taking a sever falloff, but replace ever 2 weeks and you'll be fine.

Alkaline:
seriously, get rid of that thing it came with in a month, or at least keep track of it. I was dumb and so used to intuos stylus that I left that damn thing in there for way longer than it should had been. Battery leaked and didn't notice because of the rubber pen grip. Acid got into places that was more hassle to clean than straight up replace.

As for Yiynova in general, personally been using this more than my intuos, so anyone going that route its worthwhile so long as you remember its not Wacom level.

you're promising though. I'm waiting for your next drawing.

/jp/ is usually pretty knowledgeable about the eastern industry for some reason.

Do you guys know the standard specs of their drawing workstations/what analog or traditional tools are used by Illustrators and Animations?

just curious.

But, you aren't even a real fan of 2D... I'd deserve her more than you, but not the badly drawn one from you of course.

Awesome! Looks much better than the drawing of Flandre above. Keep it up!

Honestly, I'd be kind of annoyed if someone started "fixing" my drawings like I'm doing to yours, but I thought it'd be simpler to show you than just explain verbally. I probably screwed up something anyway.

Her right eye seems to be higher and/or smaller than her left, even when you don't account for the perspective. I moved it closer to the center and stretched it a bit vertically. The shape of the eye is pretty much up to how you want to draw it, but I made it a bit rounder, seemed more natural to me.

The bridge of her nose seemed to be almost missing given how much of her left eye showed behind it. I raised it slightly and moved the nosetip and the mouth a bit as well.

All in all, seems to me like you drew the separate elements of the face (eyes, nose, mouth etc) more or less where they belong, but you either didn't give quite enough attention to the whole or you need to study more facial anatomy, animes or not. As for the girl goddamn she's so cute

What do you mean "what is this?"
It's a picture. It's pixelart. It's isometric. It aims to look like a game and thus It's a mockup. Did this answer your question or are you hoping that it actually IS a game? In that regard, sorry, it isn't.

>> No.11440128

>>11440071
Yeah, I wasn't going to redraw it perfectly or anything, just changed the minor stuff that stood out to me.

I do feel kind of guilty about lecturing on things I'm not a master of myself, but I don't see that the advice I gave was incorrect per se. If it is, please point it out, it'd help me as well.

Ok, then.
As far as I know that picture is just a random mockup and not from someone from /jp/. Someone stated that it should be a real game in one of the past OC or Project threads if I remember correctly. I don't remember if there where any real concrete ideas but check the archive for the OC and project threads, shouldn't be too old.
