I found Preacher to be far too juvenile. Might have been more welcomed back in the 90's but outside the Anne Rice mocking story it was a chore to go through.
Compared to Morrison, Warren Ellis or Gaiman he just doesn't measure up.

This is why I couldn't get behind The New 52. I was a light comic reader before then, and I decided this was a good chance to get into it. I know it wasn't a "full" reboot, but all the origin stories were disappointing. "We know you've heard this before, so we'll skip right to the end. Also, these things are different now."

The outside world seeps into comics too much. They might as well have TV Tropes footnotes on each page.

Anime and western comics both try way too hard and take themselves way too seriously, in the end failing at what they're supposed to be, basic entertainment. The most popular things like evangelion or ghibli films are complete ass, but everyone tries to justify their shitty cartoon tastes with how ``art'' it is, just like comic fags try to justify the gay homos prancing in tights trying to look hardcore and throwing puns out every other word bubble.

In contrast, western cartoons and plenty of japanese manga just aim at being etertaining, western cartoons because they're aimed at children generally, but include content for the whole family to enjoy with slapstick humor or funny fraces. Manga because anyone and everyone can/does publish, so there is plenty of good stuff out that wont be weighted down by trying to be something its not.

Further, there are countless manga that deal with heavyhanded, "serious" issues and plenty of anime that don't go beyond standard entertainment. How long has it been since you watched it? Maybe there's still hope for you, I want to believe there is if you still appreciate the OP and ED. I used to think like you but it's not easy to get out of the gutter mentality of questioning things in anime wrongly. When the anime has a lot of thought put into it there is usually a good reason for how things happen, doesn't mean you will get it at all if you are still stuck in your idea that the anime revolves around Shinji being beta. It's much more than that but first you have to learn to appreciate it before even starting to understand it, that's why I asked you if appreciated the OP and ED in the first place.

To me, art is a word you stick to whatever worthless piece of shit you produce, knowing it cant make it under any other category. Can't make a real painting, a real game, a real movie, you call it art to console yourself. You can also put the same tag on things you're insecure about, like anime.
