Jast does a lot of stupid things, but getting out the title that will sell far better than the rest of their upcoming titles as quickly as possible makes perfect sense, especially since the very high level of interest will fall overtime as the time since the anime aired increases.

Have you seen the behavior of the average steam user and the behavior of the average Steins;Gate fan? Combining those two is like a living nightmare. It'd be for the best if Japanese companies held off from the social-networking freedom-hating steam and all of its ignorant users, as getting involved with steam would have a negative impact in all ways other than profit. Most importantly, it would set some really bad trends, which could influence the decisions of Japanese companies, not just in terms of method of sale, but in terms of actual content as well. Of course, unfortunately, if they're really convinced it will make money, they'll try to do it anyway.

Hi. I worked on Sumaga for JAST. Gckc lied about his progress, and he wasn't a competent translator either. When I TLC'd his scripts I had to change basically every other line for being either flat-out wrong or terribly worded. You should be thanking JAST for saving you from a Sumaga translation that would have been slightly better than the Flyable Heart one. It took a long time because JAST is slow (and because I held up the project by slacking), but at least the product will be decent quality instead of 3mb of trash scripts that no one would want to read.

I pity the people who read the leaked translation. I mean, really. To put that much time and effort into reading the whole thing, and still get such a sub-par experience out of it.

They would have been better off to be patient and wait for a better release, or learn Japanese.
Cue point though. The translation is noticeably shoddy. The translator himself admitted to it being kind of bad. And if you just stop and think a little, it should be obvious that the translation was couldn't have been good.
The time between the patch leaked and the time of when the project started was just really quite slim. If you were to consider the leaked patch the proper thing, it would pretty much have been the fastest VN translation project yet, relative to script size.

But people wanted to read it anyway.

It's not as if S;G was ever meant to be high tier literature. A translation has to be really, really shitty to ruin a game the way some people here like to imply, barring a few specific types of games. S;G is not one of those types. It was just about the chuunibyou and sci-fi time travel antics, and the translation got that over just fine. Waiting years to get a more polished one when it probably will only make a net difference of 5% or so on your overall experience is ridiculous, unless reading Steins;Gate one day happens to be the sole purpose of your life or something.

Also it's not as if JAST's release is going to turn a sloppy translation into an excellent one. More likely it will just turn a sloppy one into a more polished but still mediocre one, making the premise of waiting years just to get it even more ridiculous. It'd be one thing if someone who just heard of S;G today to decide it was worth waiting, but it is a ridiculous thing to expect that people who were around from the first patch would find that to be a similarly wise decision.

If I were a distributor or company, I wouldn't agree to something like this. First of all, how many people would even spend over $800 in a single sale?

>> No.11352951

>>11352912
No, I mean I'd pay $800 up front for the license, and for the first $800 worth of sales (at $20/copy, that's 40 copies), I'd keep 100% of the revenue (all $800). Then, once I'd sold that much, for every additional sale on top of that, I'd split the revenue with them. So the 41st copy I sold I would keep $10, and they would get $10. Essentially they'd get a free $800 up front, then an additional $10 per sale after 40 sales. Meanwhile I'd get no profit at all until the 41st sale, at which point I'd have $10 profit.

Since I only figure I'd get around 50 sales anyway, I'd make about $100 for the entire ordeal, and the company would get $900. Since this is more of hobby thing and I don't plan to live off of translating, that's fine with me. You see. There are for all human beings a translation layer that things pass through when they try to comprehend them in their own language. Most times it becomes stuck with joined literal meaning instead of intended thought.
Can't put together a decent English sentence? About 95% of all translators in their first 5 years of practice. Their hands are forced by the characters which meanings are binding them to using clunky sentences.

Unless you're expecting an experienced translator to work for free then you need a hell of an editor to make sense of these steaming piles of shit.

Now I'll grant you that composing a poetic English sentence to represent the idea that was originally in Japanese is difficult, that's more a problem on the English language side, not the translation part.

More people need to read Ezra Pound's thoughts on translation. He was particularly good with Asian languages.

Incorrect. It took at least three months to translate, so at 1.78 MB that would be roughly 0.020 MB/day. It's still significantly less than what is probably the record holder: Ixrec's debut project MOON., 0.82 MB, taking precisely 31 days to translate, meaning an average of 0.026 MB/day.

You're doing it entirely wrong. Revenue sharing agreements work the other way around: For every sale up to an arbitrary point, the publisher gets X%, then for every sale beyond that (up to another arbitrary point), the publisher gets Y%, where Y > X. (This usually continues with even higher tiers where the publisher gets an even larger part of the profit.)

The reason for this is simple, and you have already highlighted the flaw in your own posts. The burden of advertisement, getting people to actually buy the game, is on the publisher. The gradually increasing percentage provides an incentive to the publisher to make it a big success, as more sales = larger portion of the profit. In a deal where you as a publisher suddenly make a lot less after X copies, you're more likely to go 'ah, screw it' after X copies has been reached since after that you only get half as much.

That's weird, I'm doing about 40KB a day, and these last few days I've averaged 60KB on my project because my deadline got pushed forward. This is before editing/proofreading, of course. But I'm also spending up to 16 hours a day working on this to get it done. I know if I could set my own pace I'd do around 15-20KB per day, with days off every now and then. For reference the script is 341KB and I started working on it August 20.

>>11355380
Ah, thanks for that. That makes a lot more sense. So I'd give them something like half of each sale until I hit $800, then more like only 25% after that? Interesting. I really wish localizations would be more open about how this works, since reinventing the wheel seriously sucks.

"KB" is relative per encoding and such but if you're doing 40-60 of raw text per day (even 16 hours) you're probably going too fast to do a decent job. That's much faster than pretty much any professional.

Slow down and focus on producing work of reasonable quality. Especially if this is your first project.

You have no business sense. If you give $800 as your 'I did a good job, now I get more' mark, any company would laugh at you. If you can't promise at least $800 in revenue (for them) you're better off not even considering it. If we take MangaGamer's estimated game sales as an example, you'd take 1000 copies sold as the first point, then 2000 copies sold as the second point (as anything above 1000 copies is a success for MangaGamer and 2000 copies is a huge success). Also, 50% to 25% is a VERY steep decrease. Try a 10% or less change per step.

>> No.11355484

Ah, that's probably it. The scenario script has all the voice and image file calls in it, as well as some commented out junk data. I'd say 60% max of each file is actual text that needs to be translated. It's all raw text, though, not encoded at the moment.

And I also definitely need to go through and touch it up. I was playing through it the other night as a kind of play test and I noticed a lot of typos, and one or two lines that were just wrong. So my effective rate is probably more like 10KB/day or so. And again, the Japanese is really simple.

Late to the show, but most of the licenses are negotiated on royalties or some combination thereof. As for translators, MG pays per character translated ($0.01/chara last I heard), and JAST sets a budget for each title as some fraction of expected sales split across all project members (which makes sense since JAST tends to work with pre-existing teams rather than individual contractors). Which is better probably depends on how long the project is, but they're pretty comparable. For either of them, send them an email and see what they can do, MG has a history of picking up random small nukige though, so you might have more luck there.

I wouldn't recommend negotiating directly with the original company though, they are businesses after all, anything above small doujin groups tend to have no interest in negotiating with individuals. Japanese businesses are a different beast, a lot of them in this industry know each other, and who you are and who you know are super important in getting anywhere.

The main difference is that MG pays based on length while JAST pays on prospective sales. So if you get something short but that's likely to sell well, JAST will pay better/etc. MG pays promptly upon delivery of work, not sure about JAST's practices, but they seem a fair bit less professional in that department.

Anyhow, yeah, if it's a proper company there's next to no chance you'll get any kind of deal with them. Even smaller ones have distributors and all sorts of licensing shit to deal with and in all likelihood they can't actually negotiate directly with you even if they wanted to.

>> No.11363542

>>11363490

JAST actually pays different set values depending on how long the game is. Like $5,000 for a short game, $10,000 for medium, etc. However, it's split between everyone working on the project, so it can be more or less depending on how many people there are.

Where can I find resources on how visual novel translators edit the text?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm solo translating a flash game 妹と2 >>>/f/2095893
by hex editing each individual line, which I believe is the least painful way to translate Flash (decompiling is not an option). However, the problem I have with this is that I can't be sure on how to deal with character length problems as well as avoiding corrupting the swf.
Since VN translators probably go through this daily I figured any resources on the subject would be absolutely helpful.

A decent VN won't be in flash, for instance. The game I did was on the Kirikiri engine, which uses .xp3 files, which are pretty well documented for extracting script files. So it wasn't too hard once I figured out the tools. Then I opened the script in notepad and typed my translations over each line that needed to be done.
