Why do japanese onomatopoeia sound nothing like the actual sound.

For example, Nyaa? Neko? Those sound nothing like 'meow' or 'ribbit'... I demand an explanation here

Every culture has their own different onomatopoeia for representing different sounds, each wilder and more odd-sounding than the next. But in their own way they do make sense if you think about it.

One of David Sedaris's essays did a nice job of satirizing the gap between onomatopoeia of different countries, if I remember correctly.
