Hello konishiga /jap/anese
My girlfriend kicked me out the house last month so I have been feeling really depressed and picked up this game. After two weeks I was finally able to beat the game on normal mode, I have been trying lunatic these last 5 days but I always die to the last boss, is there any hints? Mystical Power Plant. It's a Touhou fangame made in danmakufu. Has some pretty weird difficulty curves here and there, but it's pretty fun. The creator of it must have been playing SDOJ at the time of making it, since you can unlock different routes that disable the spellcard system entirely. Hell, it even gives the bosses the same exact lifebars from SDOJ.

Scoring in UFO leaves me feeling as though I've tried to play a CAVE game for score. A feeling of despair and suffering always comes before I can ever finish a run, my finger nearly instinctively goes over to ESC and then R the moment I know the run has gone in the shitter. It doesn't matter that I NMNB'd up to Stage 6, because my score was going to be shit in the end because of one or two fatal mistakes in the last two levels. A dropped chain or a wrongly timed UFO is the absolute worst, these frame perfect techniques that I spent months practicing never work in the runs that I finally consider to be my final runs.

so, I have a question regarding directional input using joy2key or xpadder.

One of my controllers uses PoV hats, let's call it the "pov controller". So it must use one of these programs in order to assign the arrow keys and shift/z/x/ctrl to the pov hats in order to operate coherently. That's fine, and I do well with it, but what I'm wondering is:

if I use a controller which is already recognized by the game and already has directional inputs without the need of xpadder/joy2key, if I assign arrow keys, etc. using these programs to the controller, what happens? Does it override the controller's inputs, use both at once, or ignore one or the other?

Mostly asking because I'd imagine using keyboard keys is more precise than using a gamepad's directional input, and I'm not sure if it's subconsciously hitting me or what but I feel like I'm playing better with pov controller than my other pad which is automatically detected. It's weird because this pov controller is new and stiff as hell, and I've been using the saturn controller beforehand which I should typically be doing better with. Though it does require a USB converter, so I'm thinking that's causing lag.

I would test this myself but I don't know how. Please help.

Dammit, I hate UFO so much, especially Byakuren (and her last spellcard). Just now, I managed to reach St 6 with 5 extra lives and still failed (Normal, Survival, SanaeB). I can't even just finish last stage to practice it for 1cc. This game is the only one of main windows touhou games (well, except of PoFV which I'm not planning to play) which I didn't 1cc yet. Even worse, I don't have much motivation for it (for example, I liked SA a lot so even if it was hard, I didn't mind to practice it to achieve 1cc), I can't find anything good for me (well, the only thing I liked are Murasa's and Nue's themes).
I checked some amount of replays but can't find any useful tips for Byakuren's last spellcard. Can anyone help with some tips if they exist?

>> No.11253641

>>11253608
>I don't have much motivation for it
Then don't play it. Nobody is forcing you to play it.

UFO Stage 6 gets pretty much trivialized by Sanae B if you grab all the resources in the stage and just bomb everything. Not to mention that her last spellcard is static, and fairly easy to dodge in the first place, just stay under her as much as you can and the spell ends pretty fast.

>> No.11253656

>>11253608
For Byakuren's last spell on normal, stay slightly above the bottom-middle of the screen, and try not too move too high or low throughout.
Each wave is aimed in a way, so if you move up and around the screen too much you can end up getting screwed over by a clusterfuck.
If you die or have to bomb during it, don't move up to shotgun her because it'll just fuck up the aiming components of the spell and you'll probably get killed by a weird pattern when you go back down (either way, she's immune for ages when you bomb).
Since it's all aimed somehow, it's (in theory) possible to learn and cap it 100% of the time, you'll probably want to use the boss rush patch to practice it.

>> No.11253672

It's okay. UFO is a game that requires Gus levels of masochism to be able to play it for more than two hours at a time, just take a break from it between runs. UFO and DOJ are the games that made me self-loathing enough to grind a single stage for hours at a time, would not recommend playing to that point.

>> No.11253693

It's aimed. If you want consistency, you can memorize a path, as long as you use the same shot-type and have the same power. Otherwise, just basic "don't hit the bullets" strats apply. I don't want to be that guy, but come on, It's just normal mode.

I don't like latest Touhous.

If I die in the middle of the stage, in TH08 you can continue from that point, complete level and then practice it till perfection. In recent it changed so now I have to redo whole stage.

In TH08 it's really easy to get max power. In later - much harder. Which means that if I die, I will not have as much DPS as if I would if I hadn't died. Less DPS = more chances to die.

Fuck dat.

It's usually better to go for the green UFOs in stage6, unless you only need one summon for a full life.

What I would do on the last spell, and what works really well on lunatic for me at least: Just stay almost complete at the bottom of the screen under her, and try to have as little horizontal movement as possible so the pattern doesn't get to crazy. You can dodge most of the waves just by moving up and down again. If you stay as high up as you do things come from the sides and it's just weird to dodge.

Just curious, since there are so many eastern games I never see on your board.

But generally speaking, it's the charm of a mythical place detached from reality, like how later europeans fantasized about greek mythology and drew inspiration from it.

It is, and hourglass just makes it much more easier. It's silly to TAS a game for the purpose of making others think you're a good player, but luckily, it's very obvious that they're cheating most of the time. If you have 360 Futari, you can watch VixyNyan's replay there. Some of the parts are just hilarious to watch because of how obviously cheated it is, zipping through a dense bullet pattern while going at full speed.

This TAS made me laugh all throughout the second loop. Who needs laser? It doesn't even try, he just makes perfect horizontal lines while slightly tapping up or down to avoid the bullet walls.

Once you finish up with NB runs, think about where you died on a previous run and use bombs there instead. basically the idea is to make touhou more like CAVE, first change I want to do is do away with difficulty modes and extras.. it's only got a 'start game' and when you press it:

first loop: play the whole game on normal difficultiy
then right away when you beat that, carrying on your lives and bombs
second loop!: LUNATIC MODE!
and..

Depends on your definition of "good." I want to say LNB/Scoring "good" takes hundreds of hours minimum, but you are welcome to disagree with that.

Simply clearing the games comes down to how well you can conserve resources in the first half, followed by efficient usage of said resources in the second half. Most games give more bombs than there are spellcards, so it is completely viable to learn the stages (if applicable, like PCB) then bomb everything else. Games like UFO, TD, and DDC will however require you to form a resource-gathering route to some extent.

YEEESSSS

Finally cleared DDC's Extra Stage. I mean, the game only came out yesterday, but no individual parts of the Extra Stage are particularly hard, so I feel ashamed to have taken so long. Also, it was a rather humiliating ending, as I got hit right before the Spell Card ended, so all the bullets were cleared before victory. I had no lives or bombs left. Still though, I fucking won, so now I'm going to move on to trying to get a 1CC on Hard.

I must say, though, her last Spell Card was surprisingly easy. I arrived at her last Spell Card with no extra lives and 3 bombs, and I didn't expect to defeat her on my first time seeing it. Neato.

Jesus Christ that was a hard one.

Somehow I managed to gather up 7 lives at the end of stage 3, then I ended with 6 or so at the end of stage 4. After that, I bombed almost everything, but a victory is a victory even if it is devoid of elegance.

I can never NMNB the Level 15 boss, I always drop a bomb on him because he mixes up his patterns or I nearly get sniped by a ship off the side and panic.

It's semi consistent for me to stream to the right after his first pattern, it kills the sniper tanks off and keeps his second pattern away from me. Every so often he shoots out his first pattern really fast and that causes me to die or panic bomb. I've gotten much more consistent at doing 01 and 05 properly though, but getting to the middle point of 15 with no miss and no bomb makes me play very silly. I hit a stray bullet in each credit I played last night, and even rammed the ships that came in from the sides that you're supposed to quick shot.

Sticks feel so much nicer to play on anyway, the clicky sound and feeling just feel so right when you're playing an arcade game.
