How come no popular Western artists have used Vocaloid yet? Particularly the big electronic ones, they're always using new technology and production techniques.

Will it be long before Hatsune Miku's backing vocals end up on a Lady Gaga or Kanye West album?

It's not about sounding real. I find that her voice sounds grating. I don't mind high-pitched cute voices, but Miku's just rubs me the wrong way. It's fine for people who aren't able to sing, but want to produce their own songs. However, when I see professional shit like Project Diva using those actual songs, it's beyond awful.

It's too bad since I like her character design.

That's reasonable enough.

I like the voice. I mentioned that it's not real because fake-sounding voices tend to bother me (Auto-Tune for example really gets on my nerves), but Vocaloid tends to produce vocals that are a fine balance between obviously software-generated and enjoyable enough to listen to. Maybe other people have a different threshold when it comes to fake vocals, or perhaps they just don't like the sound of Hatsune Miku's vocals (as in your case).

At any rate, I think we've reached the point where it sounds good, but the software could still use some work. It would be nice to have synthesized vocals that can fit any genre, even stuff like opera. It would also be nice to see improvements to non-Japanese Vocaloids. That English demo of "Scarborough Fair" was interesting, but I don't think the technology is quite there for a general audience.

Personally I believe it's because Japanese is a far easier language to produce programmaticly. The spoken language is made up of around 40-50 syllables. Once you've got a method to produce these at various pitches, you can have your computer produce almost any spoken text you want.

English syllables are composed of a number of letters, allowing thousands and thousands of different sounds. Trying to get a computer to make all these correctly at different pitches is a pain to do well.
