Mad Father also did the "main character was evil all along" thing but in that one it's way less of a gut punch because you're not set up to unknowingly work against goodness and justice for the whole game, rather it's just a game without good people in it.

The real fuck-you in the game is that by the logic of the story, the witch is predestined to win. The demon will keep restarting time until she succeeds, so there is never even a chance for Viola to get revenge (let alone her body back). It's kind of like Funny Games. This sort of "evil WILL win" thing severely upsets me, psychologically, way more than any traditional story structure can.

It's the exact same thing as here (albeit a milder version): once the game is ending or has ended, the player is shown that the main character is (will be) evil and you (the player) should never have helped her and in fact should never have played the game at all. The differences are academic.

If you go through the game without saving, then the cat appears later to tell you that you didn't need his help in the end. The witch replies that the house has been guiding her all along because it's her house despite being in Viola's body.
