wut?

Bucketloli is probably the most memorable 1st level midboss ever. Level two boss is bitchy in a very creative way. Unicorn oni does some pretty crazy shit.

Now of course the 4-6 and extra bosses are much more important, and we don't know what those are like yet, but so far the danmaku is interesting.

I'm not so sure about fun though, the jury is still out on that one. Part of the reason is probably bugs though, for example one of the level 2 boss's spellcards can punch though the border bomb. This shouldn't happen.

Now by far the most disappointing part of SA for me has been the bombs. MoF bombing system aside, the bombs are far too weak. Particularly annoying is how difficult it is to bomb some of the level 2 boss's spellcards.

>> No.1121524

I of course meant they looked horrible by ZUN standards, geniuses. Specifically, they didn't look at all better than in MoF. I wonder why he doesn't just reuse the pics he drew for IN. Those were acceptable.

As for the patterns, yes I played the fucking demo and yes they looked like complete fucking crap compared to the inventiveness of the MoF patterns. The projectiles also were simpler, and that's a bad thing, they made that shit look like EoSD (and that's a VERY bad thing since EoSD is pretty much the worst Touhou game).

I'd like to see Sakuya actually. She has the potential for some really cool danmaku as StB showed.

I'll agree with you on half of that. I think the bosses were up to par, but the stages were incredibly disappointing, especially compared to MoF.

EoSD had some good challenging stages. PCB had elements of good challenging stages (stage4 was good, except I'd like to see half of it added to stage 3 instead). In IN the stages got way to simple and easy (with the exception of lunatic maybe?).

MoF got better and had really good stage design (I think it was ruined a bit by the bombing system though). However SA has terrible stage design. Its both difficult and boring, a terrible combination. No creativity at all, except in parts of stage 3.

Honestly, if you're playing a game like this, you should already know you're probably going to spend lots of hours remembering and trying to clear patterns, which is why this genre isn't for everyone. Powerful bombs encourage players to be lazy, instead of trying to find a solution.

Plus, we've had death bombing since Lotus Land Story, so you should be trying and clear a spellcard regardless. You really have no excuse for bombing for the sake of bombing.

>> No.1121832

Fucking duh. I couldn't have gotten as far as I've gotten without spending lots of time remembering and trying to clear patterns.

However I like not having to memorize every single pattern. I like how I can be bad at some spell and still beat the game. That's the way things should be.

Its ok for an extra, which is why extra bosses are immune to bombs. Its not ok for a whole game. It becomes not fun. I know this because I've played a number of shooter games.

How good are you at touhou games anyway? Everyone I've heard of who has said stuff like "you should be trying and clear a spellcard regardless" hasn't gotten farther than normal mode on Imperishable Night.

Once I started playing and beating hard mode though I realized that strategic bombing is important and instead of spending over 9000 hours trying to perfect a spellcard you're 3/40 against you should just bomb it the first time you think you may be in danger. Sure the game is easier with powerful bombs like that, but its also funner if you only have to get good at the spellcards you enjoy facing and feel are within your ability.

>> No.1121859

>>1121832
Also setting it up like that makes for a much for gradual learning curve.

Gradual learning curves are good, that's what made Imperishable Night such a success. Someone could play a shmup for the first time. 1cc easy mode then gradually working their way up practicing spellcards and stages.

Lets say someone is weak against lasers. They can bomb lasery spellcards, practice the spellcards they like. Beat normal and start working on hard. Then midway through realize that they can capture lasery normal difficulty spellcards now.

When I cleared PCB lunatic, I got 100% capture rate for the first 3 stages, and then bomb spammed my way to the end. Theoretically I could have kept trying to capture, and I have individually captured most spellcards in the game, but by that point I was getting bored with the game and just wanted the clear. But I ended with 0 lives 2 bombs, so I probably wouldn't have made it without the cherry boost from the early captures.

I tend to stick to hard mode, if I'm in the mood, I'll do some lunatic. Fortunately, I have pretty good pattern recognition skills, so learning the outline of an entire stage only takes a few plays.

There will be occasions when I panic bomb, but I'll note what I was doing wrong, and put into practice next time.

I will admit though, I do miss the sight of seeing a huge ass laser on the screen.

You really should be trying to clear without bombing.

That's not to say you should never bomb, but it's always better to clear without using one if you can.

And before you ask, I've beaten Hard on IN and gotten within seconds of beating Hard on PCB. I've finished all of the Windows Extra stages except for EoSD's, where I can get to QED.

Well you won't be beating hard mode until you learn to bomb more often. I know I didn't.

>>1121953
This is pretty normal I'd imagine. Giving Sakuya four bombs was a really stupid idea. Part of the problem is that Yuyuko's 80% reflowering is easy and timeout and such. In the case of IN lunatic where you need to have a few extra lives as buffer to beat the jewel you can't do that as much.

You seem to be making some pretty quick assumptions.

I clear hard on a pretty regular basis without having to bomb so much. You'd be amazed how often a bullet will just zip past you when you think it's going to hit.

Being a person who cares more about spellcard capture, I won't bomb unless I absolutely must. Having good bombing discipline and death bombing reflexes are important skills.

Because you improve more quickly that way, IMO. Bombing becomes a crutch if you use it immediately. I fully admit, if I'm just playing to clear, I just go 'fuck it' and bomb any card I don't like, but if I'm playing to get better, I try to bomb as little as possible.

>>1122049

I got toward the end of PCB on Hard right when my classes decided that they needed to eat all of my spare time, so I haven't had a chance to try it again yet. I actually hadn't played any Touhou games for about half a year until yesterday.

Now I'm working on getting my skills back by rebeating all the games on Normal before moving on to PCB on Hard again. Though I'll be working on SA when it hits, of course.

That's what I thought.

When I play in practice mode I try to capture every card, and that's how I'm able to get better.

But if I'm doing a real run and I'm staring at a number like one in twenty something for my record on the spell I'll bomb as soon as I know the bomb will finish off the spellcard.

And then when I'm at the final attacks and I don't have enough lives or bombs to survive. I'll go into practice mode and try to get one of those 1/20ish spellcards up into 16/40ish.

So back to my original point, the fact that you can beat the game while still being 1/20 on a lot of spellcards allows me to take it easy and makes touhou a lot more fun than I Wanna Be The Guy for instance.

Also MoF was bad because it allowed bombing of some spellcards without penalty, so people who are just interested in beating the game will not try to capture those spellcards. PCB with Sakuya is kinda eh because you get too many lives and bombs and end up bombing a lot of the latter interesting and very capturable spellcards.

tl;dr (for all my posts) critique and bitching. Due to hubris I'm actually attempting to make a touhou game (I'm at the "how I shot directx lol" stage), but I only make progress when 4chan is down.
