Twitter is useful because you can message everyone you know at once. It's like a great big conversation between hundreds of people. Most users don't actually spam completely useless bullshit, less so than facebook.

I don't see how it's any different in concept from 4chan except no anonymity. Just random postings that can include images and get replies.

Because it's a clusterfuck format. They've somehow taken threaded comments and made them worse, particularly because you can reply to multiple people or reply to someone without directly including their username, or include someone's username when you're not replying to something they've said. So basically the "View Conversation" feature doesn't show an actual conversation most of the time, because the Twitter software isn't psychic.

If it was just laid out like a traditional bulletin board or an ordinary private messaging system, it would be fine. But instead they want the best of all worlds, and it's just a mess.

It does have conversation threads... if they @you it shows on your みんなの反応 page and you can start a conversation from there, viewing the entire convo in a drop down format.

It only gets out of hand if you've got hundreds of people tagging you. That's also probably why she went private. It can become unmanageable if too many people are spamming your shit.
