90% of the threads on the front page of /jp/ are anime, so I might as well post one too.

I'm studying tourism and English at Niagara College, and I was planning to work abroad in Japan (or Korea, but my main goal is Japan), and I was wondering if the need for jobs in tourism are plentiful? Can I even apply for a living Visa if I only have a diploma, not a degree?

Wat? You want to go to Japan and work as a travel agent to send Japanese people to English-speaking locations?

>> No.1118347

yeah, what do you mean by tourism? Because if you want to be showing people around temples and stuff, you're going to fail. They want japanese people for that.

That's the thing, I don't even truly know what I want to do.
I'm taking tourism because 60% of the course load is economics and business (my two strongest subjects throughout highschool), and it's the only program focusing on business. In reality I have the skills to do any sort of job in a business firm, etc.

Not to mention studying tourism gets my application for a working holiday visa noticed by the Japanese embassy in Canada.

That's the thing, I don't even know what kind of jobs could be offered to me. Tourism is the highlight course of Niagara College, since Niagara Falls is a huge tourist city between Canada and the US, and here I would land a job instantly.

What kind of person asks 4chan what they should do with their career life and is still serious about it? Oh, I see, you were just kidding.

...right?

what kind of major is tourism

I'm not really asking what to do with my life, as I've already decided tourism is a part of it. I just want to know if tourism is big in Japan enough so a white man can get in on it.

I tried /trv/ and got no replies, so I figured /jp/ was the next best thing.

Well, the rule of thumb with overseas employment usually is that you need to get as qualified as possible to not risk being left stranded. I'd recommend you finish college first. Tourism is kind of weak in Japan now because of the dire straits the economy is receding into again, fewer people travel to and from Japan. Korea is probably a better choice since you got a lot of new opportunities opening up cause of North Korea's new tourism destinations.

yeah, and if (when?) North Korea ever opens up, business will be good over there. I mean come on...a 3rd world country struggling to catch up with everyone else.

And an asian country at that. Fuck, african niggers can[t catch up, but a 3rd world Asian country? Man, business will be great

Doesn't matter if it's third world or not, it's heavily subsidised by North and South Korea, hence a lot of money to be made.

There's no such thing as a foreigner with a job in Japan.
Enjoy teaching english.

That's why I'm also studying English. I have something to fall back on if the hunt for a job in tourism fails. I plan to do a working holiday visa, work for a year in Japan (WHV is usually 6-12 months), and while I'm there inquire about future tourism jobs. If I can't find anything I can either teach English, or just stay here in Canada and work with tourism (not something I'd like to do, kind of a last resort kind of thing).

An English degree is no fallback option. This is a graduated English major talking. English is up there with philosophy degrees in the "Do you want fries with that?" job choice category.
