See, that's what I mean. That's what the verb "to be" covers.

However I've read some texts that suggest that there is more to it. And in anime I've heard "desu" tacked on to the end of phrases and sentences where it doesn't seem to be functioning as "to be"(I am, you are, he is, it is, etc).

For example, I've heard, "よろしくです!”

So what gives?

I guess it could just be anime characters being "quirky" or "different" or "cute". Though, as I said, I've seen text books allude to "desu" having a wider meaning.

>> No.11124577

Question marks in Japanese are used to indicate rising intonation, and do not always explicitly mean it's a question. This is especially true when used in combination with よ. When a sentence ends in よ? it implies that the speaker is a bit confused that the other person doesn't know, thus the rising intonation.

The first part is his translation of 何って... which is just her parroting back what was said before (he likely said なにしてるんだ or something)

>> No.11124586

I should also note that the use of the question mark is a recent addition to Japanese language, and some writers shun its usage while others embrace it (especially writing intended for younger readers)

Higenamuchi's one of my favorite artists. I recently read this and at first scored it a 6/10 "it's ok". After a while I got curious, actually looked up the Kanji and made out what they were talking about. When I found out pregnancy was involved it turned into a solid 10/10.

I fucking need to learn Japanese.

Changing the topic a little bit, I don't know how to speak, write or read moon language, but I'm taking a 2 days per week course, and it seems it will last for 5 years.

But since japanese people learn their language until they actually are in high school -unless I'm misinformed- which is at least 15 years of constantly practicing and speaking, my question is, will it be enough?

There's plenty of people on /jp/ that knows a good amount of Japanese. Most of us just don't give a fuck about these threads or against turning /jp/ into 4chan's translation service. Really, most of the people that do try to help are the ones not very far in their studies at all and want to be try hards. And because of that, people start thinking /jp/ must suck at Japanese when really, we just don't want to help you.

Like the other say, no one can exactly translation, except you. If you will expect good translation, you should explain other situation.
for example,
what the situation?: love scene? summon the devil or other?
who said and who received the word? man? woman? human? devil or other?
I think, it seems a part of scene of summon. you should translation like "make agreement of pure spirit with you" or so.
