What does "desu" actually mean? I've read Japanese instruction books that'll say something like, "For now it will be easiest if you think of 'desu' as the verb 'to be', however it doesn't really mean that" (paraphrasing obviously)

What does it actually mean? Or maybe, how does it actually function?

However I've read some texts that suggest that there is more to it. And in anime I've heard "desu" tacked on to the end of phrases and sentences where it doesn't seem to be functioning as "to be"(I am, you are, he is, it is, etc).

For example, I've heard, "よろしくです！”

So what gives?

I guess it could just be anime characters being "quirky" or "different" or "cute". Though, as I said, I've seen text books allude to "desu" having a wider meaning.

Setting translation aside, the writer's Japanese is a bit awkward.

Higenamuchi's one of my favorite artists. I recently read this and at first scored it a 6/10 "it's ok". After a while I got curious, actually looked up the Kanji and made out what they were talking about. When I found out pregnancy was involved it turned into a solid 10/10.

Changing the topic a little bit, I don't know how to speak, write or read moon language, but I'm taking a 2 days per week course, and it seems it will last for 5 years.

But since japanese people learn their language until they actually are in high school -unless I'm misinformed- which is at least 15 years of constantly practicing and speaking, my question is, will it be enough?
