Kind of, though I wasn't thinking in terms of power. The MoF group is more balanced across the board with it's two gods and a descendant of the gods as their shrine maiden. The Yakumo family is basically all about Yukari with her servants acting to further strengthen her position and let her TAKE IT EASY.

Yakumo family are my favourite because of the wide range of awesome personality they have and heart attack inducing levels of moe. Each of them play off one another perfectly with Yukari scheming up strange new ways to troll Gensokyo ultimately fixing whatever minor problems been going again, Ran does all the house keeping and mothering acting as a grounding point for the family and Chen as the playful adorable Cat Girl for the two to look after and mother.

That said, they do have some stiff competition, especially from factions like the Scarlet Devil Mansion, though SDM plays up to a different feeling... the safest person there is the useless gate guard.

I have asked this question before, and no one seems to give a good reason how/what Ran/Chen are capable of, but they usually place decently on TOUHOU POWAH CHARTS. Dumb vague power charts. Even Cirno's powers/theme are obvious and make sense.

Well, Chen is a nekomata so she should be able to control corpses (or the dead in general?) with her tails. She doesn't seem to be interested in that.

Kitsune--do a variety of vaguely perverted Japanese things. They're messengers to the inari, they're tricksters, and they even get into romantic or sexual interests of humans when in human form. As for what probably makes them unique is their intelligence, which is said to increase with age, unlike their tails, which increase to nine and then drop to four when they attain divine status.

They get good placing because both become stronger while their master is around. Chen is usually 'average', average being around Mystia's level seeing as most the bosses in Touhou are above average Youkai... Chen actually attacks villagers from time to time and gets fended off. However, when she's possessed by Ran as her shikigami Chen becomes much stronger (mid-stage extra level boss).

Chen is the weakest with notable weaknesses that can easily bring her down to her normal beast youkai level, water will remove her shikigami possession, catnip will distract her and she attacks in predictable beast like patterns.

Ran on the other hand starts at extra boss strength with no real weaknesses. She's probably the strongest beast youkai around before Yukari made her into her shikigami. Without Yukari she's a very strong youkai, with Yukari she becomes that bit stronger. Ran doesn't have any clear powers, much like Yuka's actual power over flowers is pretty crap... their strength comes from just being strong Youkai (Yuka much more so of course, the point is to show that you don't need hax powers to be considered strong).

So yeah, both have varying levels of strength. Ran and Yukari are the stronger characters, with Yukari being the most hax character going, Chen isn't much to brag about but when Ran is around she can give most people a run for their money.

I appreciate the answer, but it still feels so vague. What is black magic in Gensokyo? Marisa's witchcraft is classic black magic. Alice's dolls are almost a cross of voodoo and possession, more black magic. But you never see Ran with any fetishes/tools that would be an object of power to help make sense of her abilities. Just tails, tits, and an awesome hat and dress.

Actually... it is admitted by Aya in one of her reports that Ibuki Suika is the strongest in Gensokyo. That is also reinforced if you count the lowest numbered good ending of each game to be the canon ending, seeing that would mean Suika is the only youkai to ever defeat Reimu.

Doujin artists seem to interpret Ran's fighting as mostly awesome strength and speed, mostly because translating her strength from the game with her tight danmaku bullet patterns and bitchy spell cards and applying to her official descriptions don't put her down for any obvious powers like most the other characters.

Basically, she's described as being a 'top class beast youkai powerful enough to have her own shikigami' and never go into exactly how, so by default people assume she's just a bad ass fighter. Oh yeah, and she's pretty much the youkai equivalent of a computer, she's extremely intelligent with one of her interviews with Aya having her going on about how she used math to work out some pointless crap about a river and bored Aya with it. Maybe she has math powers.

Ignoring exactly how reliable both Aya and Akyu are for information, I accept that Suika is considered by most to be the strongest in Gensokyo. My thoughts are just that Yukari is the most 'hax'. Suika's powers are gross without a doubt, but her power over density is pretty straight forward, abusive as hell and easily one of if not the strongest going... but it doesn't have the sheer range of ridiculous crap Yukari's power has. Seriously, when you can theoretically pull fictional characters out of a book to fight for you or simply recreate any power you fancy chances are you have the most hax power around.

She has strength and speed and intelligence because she's a kitsune. Her spell cards reflect the same thing. Except, the sign that she usually uses is shikigami or ritual, so she's also said to be a master of shikigami (binding) rituals.

Never demonstrated, but a potential conclusion since Yukari's powers are not bound by conceptual borders. She supposedly invaded the Lunar Capital the first time by distorting just the image of the full moon reflected in the water. Akyu's explanation of her power - whether or not she has gotten to that point yet - is quite frightening, to say the least.

Like I said, theoretically. When it comes to loosely defined limits on powers, Yukari wins hands down. That said, just because she can manipulate boundaries doesn't mean it's easy. I remember it being described that just changing someone from being alive to dead through boundary manipulation is pretty tough because of the amount of boundaries involved. But hey, it's not like she invaded the moon by manipulating the boundary of a reflection once or anything...

Keine's power has been used a few times, but it's mostly to comedic effect. EX-mode Keine is more known for her CAVED then she is for her awesome powers.

Actually, what I'm looking for is that doujin where Mokou eats the remains of a phoenix as a explanation for where she got her fire powers from. It basically had Mokou going around, immortal but basically just a human who seeking her revenge goes to acquire the powers of a phoenix, she's told by the phoenix that she's probably one of the few people that could actually do it because normally you'd just burn and die for trying but due to Mokou's immortality she just ends up being in agony for several years before getting used to it.
