TOUHOU can be very difficult if you don't play it right.

I'm trying to gather information to help beginners build a solid foundation for becaming an epic lunatic player FAST.

Have I missed anything? If you have any tips, no matter how small, please share them.

Is that a troll image?
Everything there is wrong.

Touhou is only reaction in some early fairy parts of the stage, every boss and late stages are just knowing the patterns. Dont play fullscreen, play in the standard 800 window, fullscreen is too big to pay attention to the pattern. The music is fine for the game since its mostly synched well with it. Dont save bombs, you'll die with unused bombs that should have been used for you not to die.

Well, this is mostly a score vs. clear thing.
If you can't clear reliably, bomb like it's 1944 Berlin. If you can, conserve bombs to get higher score and use them only for deathbombing or severe emergencies (as your skill level goes up, you'll be able to sense an impending death better)

>> No.11074519

energy drinks are horrible for touhou, they'll make you twitchy and you'll "dodge" into bullets you didnt notice because of your caffinated tunnel vision, then you'll crash hard around stage 6 because the sugar is wearing off

fullscreen is good, ill agree with that

muting touhou music or listening to other music while playing touhou
thats fucking sacrilegious right there

controller
i prefer mouse and keyboard (unless im playing the fighters(, but different strokes for different folks i guess. Id prefer controller if there was variable speeds, as opposed to moving or not moving.

save your bombs
use a bomb save a life. yea dont get bomb happy, but its a lot easier to 1cc if you use them. Think of each bomb as a life. Its no good if you end up wasting about 6 bombs because you were too hesitant to use them twice.

if you wanna get better, practice on difficulties that are highter than what you wanna play. so you play normal, cool. play lunitic and get as far as you can using all your continues. do this a couple times, then drop back down to normal and you'll find everything much easier, which will give you time to look at how everything is coming at you and it makes everything easier because you can start to understand what you're actually doing.

Don't play the lame video games. Instead watch the official animes, since they will cover everything that happens in the video games and mangas. Also watch touhou flashes on youtube and search for pictures of the characters you think are the most epic on Ask® images in order to get the true touhou experience.

I've seen people stream horrible rap music over Touhou before. It's absolutely disgusting, but at the same time, music over the game can be acceptable. When you're heavily grinding part of a stage or spellcard, the music can get a bit repetitive.

I've probably only muted the music in 9.5 and 12.5, mostly because I've heard the music of both games so many times.

-Play touhou in normal screen mode.
-Play one game after you wake up in the morning to rejuvenate your senses.
Music has a vital role in the game. You can synchronize move patterns from them.
-Play using keyboard only. It emphasize the epitome of being a Touhou player.
-Never use bombs.
-Never watch replays on Yutube.
-Only play on lunatic mode.

Lunatic feels pretty natural to me, mostly because I grew up playing arcade shooters. But why not watch replays? In the arcades, you watch other players and rip them off, share findings with them, and they rip off your tactics as well. It's no different from watching replays, and if you're going to play for score, you pretty much need to watch the best of the best play.

I have a friend who says that Touhou is all memorizing and nothing else, but nothing can convince him otherwise. He also thinks that fighting games are all about just memorizing the longest and most damaging combo and getting a single hit in to start the combo.

It's impossible to convince these people that there is more to it than what they think, especially if they're good at a completely unrelated genre.

>> No.11075591

Designing an STG to rely on memorization is just adding artificial difficulty. It's like those old platform games where there's some enemy you can't realistically dodge the first time, you had to know in advance it was there. It's just awful game design.

If an STG pro can't 1CC a game on his first try, then it's a shitty game.

I disagree that Touhou is all memorization, but a significant portion of the games can be reduced to pure memorization (the amount varying between the games).
There are patterns which will require you to read and dodge without using any memorization:
Sakuya's nons in EoSD, PCB's stage 6 spam, IN's Kaguya fight, Aya's survival in MoF, Petaflare in SA, Stage 5 post-midboss fairy spam in UFO and Miko's penultimate spell in TD as a few examples.

memorizing a combo isnt even that hard
after practicing enough muscle memory kicks in when you get an opening

besides once you play a lot and understand your character attacks you can improvise combos on the spot

fighting games are much more about understanding how youre toolset plays against other players toolsets and adapting/reading to use of said toolsets
