I actually had to do some background check on Japanese sites, mind you, and that's all I found: some nameless girl who was a KKS for 4-5 months at best back in 2010, and didn't even make the final cut. I tried to find some of her appearances, either in Ariyoshi or in theater shows, but there's none, which speaks a lot about her importance.
In other words, it's the sort of KKS who you notice only because her profile is up on the official site for a few weeks.

Can't blame them. The great thing about 0048 is that it doesn't heavily rely on referencing the AKB48 group to understand why things happen in the anime. The involvement of Kawamori made me watch it for example.

Season one had a mix of Kawamori fun and science fiction goodness with the ships/sabers/Nazis. It had a story that wasn't really specifically AKB-related and more "What if the next Macross cut out the dude and just had idols." I think it did a pretty good job as an advertisement to pique people's interest.

Season two is where it got kind of hard to follow and pandered more to established fans. Plus it was kind of a pacing trainwreck, you could really tell they wanted to tell more of the story but couldn't.

I would have hoped for Hasuo's artwork to get the first place, but it's nice to see it still making it to the final selection.
I come across his stuff quite often while browsing on Pixiv, and he always struck me as a very dedicated Mayuyu fan. Sometimes the subject is so oddly specific even I am surprised by it, you have to be following Mayuyu's activities pretty religiously to even consider putting it down in drawing.

You might have noticed how before the guests start eating there's always a shout-out to the restaurant that prepared the food and how it always feel longer and more flattering than it should rightfully be.
There are also some cases where these shout-outs get shoehorned almost unnaturally into the shows, despite being irrelevant to the theme. Just think of Tabi Run or the free-riding segment of AKB Motor Club and how they always end up hitting some local food parlor, seemingly by chance. It's not just variety shows.

That depends quite a lot on preferences, so it isn't preferable a lot of the time. For example with clothes, if you were offered something you'd never wear you'd hardly feel motivated, right? With food it's something people generally enjoy and it's quite cheap to provide many different kinds of dishes/desserts, too.

Especially with idol groups etc. you can't research every person's preference, and variety on the other hand is expensive. I think this is also the reason why the food provided as a prize is often something generally considered delicious too, like yakiniku or cake.

Something like jewelry or money rewards (large enough not to seem laughable to viewers) are only affordable to high-budget productions.

There's probably several reasons for food too, though (some already mentioned in this thread). One more thing I notice is them presenting the origin/brand of the food prize, so they probably at least get a discount for promoting the food provider. I doubt it's as good of a marketing channel to many other kinds of products, which the winners can't enjoy on screen and which may even risk looking cheap if they're connected with variety.

The problem with Team 4 was the complete lack of veterans or strong names, at that time Paruru wasn't as strong as she is now and still, she's the only one that is actually high. They had to compete with Teams with girls like Acchan, Yuko, Mayuyu, Yukirin, WMatsui...

So as a Team they lacked appeal, but I still think that Team 4 was a great opportunity for the girls that had less chance to be at the top, since that way they didn't have anyone overshadowing them while in the current teams they are (for the most part) 2nd or 3rd line.

On a previous thread, someone said that the reason why Yui and Rie's concurrency was cancelled was because of Mariko's impending graduation and that Yui was a possible candidate for captain. As to not cause any kind of suspicion, Rie was pulled out too since their concurrency was around the same time. Now I know this was just some speculation (very possible one at that) but I think Rie was pulled out too because she's potentially the best choice as captain for K once Yuko graduates. Big names are leaving that group, bar Sae, who was still a wild card at that time--but Akimoto and Itano are leaving, and Yuko seems like she's just about ready to leave as well, so KitaRie had to be back to be groomed as a captain. Yuko and Rie are close too being together in NOT YET, so I think Yuko would be at ease leaving K in her hands.

Mfw this turned to be tl;dr

Can AKB survive without the first gens?

Mocchi is a few years older than Rie and just dived in popularity so Rie is a much better bet.
Shimda would be great team K captain, but I doubt they'd give it to a completely unranked member.
