Even that style of quoting is a hack. I'm guessing at some point in the past, some nerds were like, "We need a way to indicate block quotes. Let's use the greater-than symbol." I doubt people on the ARPANET or Usenet or wherever were bitching that "> Hello" isn't a valid mathematical relationship.

Just as those dweebs took a symbol and decided a new use for it, we're taking that feature and deciding on a further use for it. You could even say we're pioneers.
