It technically will be a server too, but mainly for desktop use. Thing is going to be on almost 24/7 and I want it to last years and still be powerful.

Every computer should be on 24/7. Thermal expansion from turning a machine on and off is the primary reason for card and CPU death.

How many people that actually would give enough of a fuck to leave their machine on 24/7 actually use a CPU or GPU until it dies, though? Barring the occasional unpredictable failure short in the part's life, I mean. Also would the added cost of electricity be less than just replacing the part a bit earlier?

Get more RAM, a new haswell CPU and a GTX 770 instead.

I want ECC RAM, and the haswell processors other than xeon v3s don't support that. Not paying 600 bucks for one of them either. 230 bucks for a 1230v2 is a really good deal.

Don't need more than 8GB. Probably will not even ever use that much.

Not giving all my shekels for a 770, don't need it. 660 superclocked version is fine.

Why do you buy a server CPU for what supposedly is a desktop system?

ECC RAM support, lower power consumption, comparability with supermicro motherboard and chipset, way better price/performance ratio than buying a 3770k and almost just as powerful, my feng shui voodoo belief that server grade hardware will typically be held to a higher standard and more stable than "consumer" line products.

>> No.10996624

It's also optimized completely differently than a desktop processor.

You will get less performance in video games with it.

It looks about identical, doesn't it-

Oh huh that's a quad with HT. Not bad value indeed.

Who needs modern PC on /jp/?

2hu and VNs are running smoothly on old PC.

If you want to play in modern shit like Battlefield then you must go away and stay on /v/.

Go away pls. And delete your thread.
You can also help to report your own posts, you need ban.

I'm sure that is not a big difference and it is perfectly fine for gaming. I would take a processor that is better at compiling software (which it will be doing a lot of) and running VMs over one that is gaming optimuzed. It will see a lot of gaming use though, emulators, steam, stuff in wine.

>>10996630

Not many people, it's a very nice thing to have though. My thinkpad t60 was running strong as my main laptop until I opened it up to clean out the heatsink with air duster (first time using air-duster) and killed it in a completely retarded way. I tilted it sideways, which you are never supposed to do, and when I sprayed it the actual liquid came out all of over the components and my hand and now it won't boot up. The stuff is VERY cold and can even give frostbite apparently. In my defense, the warning that it has to be held exactly up right was not very apparent.

I only payed 60 bucks for the thing, so whatever.
