The crusaders actually were victorious during most of their campaign, but things turned sour in the last 50 years.

Hell, the Knights Hospitallier kicked ass so much that even in their weakened shape they managed to defend a small island town from an invading french force of 30,000 men with only 1000 of their own and a ragtag civilian militia.

They were monk knights scientists scholars pirates. It's always awesome to read about them.

How about no? Only one of the 6-7 crusades fought in the middle east was actually a victory for the Christians, and in the end all they managed to do was lose the Byzantine Empire to the Turks. A total disaster.

I hope with this uprising in Turkey the muslims get kicked out and they rename Istanbul back to Constantinople.

The Bizantine empire was fucking doomed from the start. The constant raidings from the rising Ottomans proved to be more than a match for the already ailing Constantinople. The crusades were a valiant, but desperate, attempt to keep the muslims at bay. Holding Jerusalem was a key strategic point they couldn't afford to lose, but they were overwhelmed due to communications disruption.

In a way, were it not for the crusaders' religious fervor, all of Europe would be called Eurokistan right now.
