Well, moe songs can be denpa songs, but not all denpa songs are moe songs.

Denpa song basically means "brainwashing song".

Moe denpa songs are more like "nauseatingly cute and crazy" instead of just "cute". Basically the kind of stuff that make normal people go "What the fuck is this?"

But yeah in my opinion some of the albums posted here are "just" moe, but since they're related it's okay.

Conversely, there are also many non-moe (sometimes even dark) denpa songs, many of them have been posted in previous threads.

In both cases lyrics tend to be either nonsensical, nerdy/otaku-ish, perverted, crazy or related to madness in some way.

Either way, this is a generalization and there's no strict rule, so don't hit your head too much over it.

The first track sounds like U's older works. You should give her albums U☆TOPIA, ULTRA☆U2 a try (from GWAVE).

About the second track, actually most ave;new project songs are like this. You might try their recollection album, ぱるちゅの☆おやCHU.

I especially like their song featured in their latest (I think) single. It's much more adrenaline-paced though.

Are there still people who think like this?

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-03/21/music-piracy-doesnt-hurt-sales

It's simple. Most people who pirate aren't people who can and/or would buy the album in the first place. Strictly speaking, the number of people who can and want to support artists most probably wouldn't change if piracy didn't exist. Taking it even further, most of us wouldn't even know about denpa. Waha recommended "from japan" and "Goody Japan" depending on which store you want to buy from. I use J-goods which I think is more expensive in comparison, but I trust them and they are quick.

As far as the whole sharing thing, if you want to support the denpa artists I highly encourage it. I do what I want. If I want to get something I'll do it, and if I want to share something I'll do it. Exposure is important for artists, and if they want a wider audience outside of Japan, they are simply going to have to implement a better way of distributing their content.
By no means does that justify what I'm doing as a "service" to them. However that goes back to my original point. I do what I want. If the artists contact me directly and ask me to take my shit down, then I'll happily oblige.
For now denpa bros, enjoy the shit I distributed and throw some money their way eventually.

That was great. Is that one of those awesome binaural CDs?

They sure like to cocktease with their PV songs, I don't think they release (or even make) the full versions often themselves; if you have luck you might find the single from the maker company itself. I'm still waiting for オコサマオトナナオサナナナ, Naoko-san ED and 雀聖学園クロノ★マジック OP (from BOOST ON too I think, I can't stop thinking about NTR with those Djibril designs, damn it).

http://altairandvega.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/denpa-bigaku-riron-the-rise-of-the-radio-aesthetic-in-japanese-subculture-in-the-21st-century/

In fact I would love OP to start putting this with the Pastebin link as I think this is far more important and descriptive of what denpa is about.

A lot of it seems to be remixed versions of what I used to say on /jp/ but it's a lot more concise than my posts and makes similarities to cultures I didn't even know about.

>> No.11044903

I wish MOSAIC.WAV would start releasing more music. I'm sick of the majority of denpa that isn't MOSAIC or Momoi, it all just sounds far too similar. I think denpa has spiritually died somewhat over the past few years. It will come back, but it's lost its mojo somewhat. I feel even DnS is just running out of things to say, too. Maybe it has something to do with how awful Akihabara has become lately.

Honestly I don't think much of ちぃむdmp☆ and never really have. I got 3 of their albums and then called it quits after that, I'm not sure if they released another. Not him but I agree.

I would like to rewrite the synopsis of what denpa (as a slang) and denpasong means in the English guide.

There's a "remix" of some explanations of knowledgeable posters here
http://denpa.uni.me/culture.html
but it's just too long for an introduction.

I've tried asking Japanese opinions but they also seem pretty all over the place, they all agree that they're crazy songs though.

I'd love to see an English source for a detailed explanation of the term itself as I'd love to see other people to enjoy it as much as I do, and of course because I want to learn more about the details myself.

I thought this article (and blog) is pretty interesting too.

I've noticed that denpa is kind of avant-garde shit. Even many "otaku" who are supposed to be open to something like this many times get creeped out or brainfucked by it. Let alone normal people.

Last month I was listening to ave;new project's オンナのコって♪マジ☆超えんじぇる with my phone in the bus and then I accidentally disconnected my headphones. The song blasted at max volume through the speakers. I got some really weird looks.

So in conclusion, they're basically unrelated and independant conceptions of music and we should stop trying to further sub-classify a niche as fuck genre.

Or we can say denpa is hyperaware of moe and takes it to the extreme, subverting it. Moe is just otaku pandering.

>we can say denpa is hyperaware of moe and takes it to the extreme
Yeah, this is probably the most remarkable difference between a normal moe song and a denpa song. Denpa takes its traits to such a extreme that it starts sounding really crazy and might make you feel uncomfortable, that's the basis. It's like increasing the contrast level of a picture so much that its colors start bleeding fucking everywhere. It might hurt your eyes the first time you see it, but after a while you end up loving the end result.

I think it's good to emphasize the difference from a typical moe song. The difference between the simple cuteness in a generic cute idol song, and the nauseating cuteness in a denpa song.

>we should stop trying to further sub-classify a niche as fuck genre.
I don't think anyone is trying to sub-classify it, it's more like showing that denpa is a broad term that encompasses many things. I don't know why some people here are unwilling to talk about it, I think it's fun.

Commonly outside of the otaku world, a crazy song that's not necessarily cute might fall into it too, for example, a yandere song.

That's why I had said "but not all denpa is moe".

But... it might get a bit subjective sometimes-
The "trudenpa" thing is kind of a joke towards this argument, but I'm always interested in knowing other people's perception about it.

Just to support my view a bit, here is an extract of a Japanese blog in where he gave away two definitions of what most people understand by denpa song:

>1. Music that emphasizes the excess of cuteness, moe, and nerdiness. (What you said)
>2. Insane lyrics, or an excessively experimental tune; literally "nonsensical" (denpa) music.

Of course this is what I understand after years of study and majoring in the subject. But if I'm wrong, please correct me.

>I feel even DnS is just running out of things to say, too.

Ah, sorry you feel that way. I also stronly disagree about your assessment of denpa's declining vitality. Let's just put things in perspective: I started 電波の世界 5 years ago when I was halfway through university and had lots of time on my hands. One of my buddies ran the I've Sound blog and I started mine as friendly competition. You'll notice that the posts count went down considerably over the years (98 in 2008, 31 in 2012). This is all due to real life stuff such as graduating, moving around and becoming a full-time salaryman.

These days, having much less time to spare, I focus strictly on the music with interviews and Comiket/M3 previews, as opposed to editorials and random opinion pieces. The smaller news blurbs all go on twitter so make sure to follow us. I've always been a heavy gamer and these days I'm plowing through my backlog. I've been travelling a lot too. Of course I haven't missed a single NHL playoffs game either so that doesn't help. So there you go, that's what's up.

If anyone is serious about writing for denpanosekai, please contact me. I'm open to just about anything related to denpa, especially the older/obscure stuff that really deserves to be documented.

I've been always in the look for old stuff. I guess you already know about these but I'll leave them here:

Some guy posted a collection of most songs in the moe list of the old denpa song guidebook (http://sound.jp/dempa_song).). This site seems to be run by some 2channeler.

There's also a site where they used to hold polls to vote for their favorite denpa song of the year:
http://wsong.net/held.html

Things like these are pretty interesting. Both sites started aroud 2003 and stopped updating around 2008-2009. I don't participate in Japanese communities and I know this was always a niche thing even in 2ch, but what if this really was the golden era of denpa?

He exaggerated though, not many lyrics are about lolis. It depends on the band but most go for nerdy stuff.

MOSAIC.WAV for example usually go for futuristic stuff, magic girls and akiba. ave;new project, being a project for Twin Angel, were also mostly about mahou shoujo/girly stuff. MilliRobo.beta clearly go for darker stuff. If you're looking for lolis and/or lewd your best bet is ポヤッチオ, おでんぱスタジオ, ちぃむdmp.

I found this definition floating around:

>Denpa is a style of Japanese pop music which takes the most defining characteristics of moe anime and visual novel openings and extrapolates them to their logical conclusions. It's a phantasmagoria of chirpy 8-bit leads, clumsy basslines, synthesized triangles, and overenthusiastic vocals which range from evocative lyrics about one's older brother to animal onomatopoeia.

Is it correct? How good is it compared to the definitions we have?

Why were these two added to the mediafire folder? I listened and they don't seem very denpa-ish. Seems to me like the only reason they were added because they were cute moe songs, which isn't what denpa is.

im not so get used to denpa song.
what is the diffrence between denpa song and moe song?

>> No.11110749

>>11110431
Moe song is just any music that is moe. It can be any kind of music as long as it makes you feel moe and uses a moe voice.

A lot of denpa songs are moe songs, but they have an added crazy element. It can be in the lyrics or it can be musically crazy, or the singing can be poor but still moe.

Some people(?) on these threads gets mad about the difference between the two. There's a lot of overlap between them and some artists who are known for denpa songs also do moe songs that aren't fully into denpa territory, so people on these threads often discuss / share those songs too. Such as the yuruyuri and zero-shaft CDs above. Both are created by composers / circles known for denpa songs, even if they might not be their most denpa-ish creations.

I was just looking through http://sound.jp/dempa_song/ under the real denpa list. Does anybody have a compilation these songs? I recall someone uploading the moe section of the list.

so, what's the distinguishing trait of denpa music?

>> No.11112069

Music: "Brain melting", over the top, weird.
Vocals: Cute voices, poor singing, silly singing.
Lyrics: Nonsensical, funny, weird, otaku, insane.

Doesn't need ALL of those traits. A few of those and you'll probably have a denpa song.

From the start I liked Bellows the best. Best character design and she's a total sis.
All the girls aside from her and Ridget are confirmed whores.

Well, not only in these threads.

>Yeah, it's exactly like the Guideline group says. I don't hate "moe" but to call it "denpa" disgusts me. I'll eventually make "We hate Akiba Pop".
(He's a vocaloid producer)

While I like all songs, from the tamest to the craziest, I still think that not drawing the line enough usually confuses new people into thinking that the rationale behind it is just cute J-pop.

I tried starting that journey too years ago, but I managed to find probably 30% of them. If you search for リアル電波 in Perfect Dark you'll find many of the songs in that list.

MOSAIC.WAV lyrics are readily available online. But I really have trouble getting lyrics by ear even in my own native language, so not having the lyrics sheets of many of the albums posted here troubles me. Why don't they put the lyrics in their official sites? I'm guessing the lyrics are intellectual property?

They do. For example:

It's only for the short version, though. For the full version's lyrics, you basically need to buy the CD.

The whole situation surrounding the term "trudenpa" is stupid. A song is either denpa or not. Simple as that. Only idiots who don't know what denpa really is, and think moe = denpa, use it. They call actual denpa songs "trudenpa" because they see people complaining that the songs they think are denpa are really not denpa.

The reason for this is that these threads are raising the popularity of denpa, and with that we are getting an influx of new people (most of them normal) that happen to come across these threads and don't bother understanding what denpa is. They then associate it with moe since most denpa tracks are moe in nature.

I agree, besides the distinction is already well explained in the sites posted in the OP.

I think the "trudenpa" thing is used partly as a joke to poke fun at the situation itself.

>They call actual denpa songs "trudenpa" because they see people complaining that the songs they think are denpa are really not denpa.
I'm not sure if I got this, I think they call them like that jokingly as to emphasize it's an actual denpa song?
