So we have three western youkai so far for DDC.

What else do you think we'll have? Dark Elves? Muses? Maybe, at long last, a Dragon?

>> No.10945723

>> No.10945720

I hope we some different stuff. Like a non-kami deity, an Aesir or something. Or a golem. Or the questing beast.

>> No.10945727

More generic monster girl bullshit since ZUN seems to have gotten onto that train.

Typical Centaur, Harpy, Naga, Slime most likely. Maybe not slime since I don't think there's any non D&D basis for them.

>> No.10945730

Western dragon is probably right out. Norse elves maybe. I doubt he will head too deeply into Greek or Roman religion. Griffin, cockatrice, basilisk, pegasus and unicorn are all pretty traditional I suppose.

None of the DDC are actually western, just like Mystia Lorelei isn't from Germany. Only her name is.

They're not literally western as in from the west, but they are creatures from western mythology.

There's an insane amount of weird critters in Finnish mythology, hundreds of them, but the problem is that no one would recognize them, even the Finns.

>> No.10945825

It's a horror-themed game, so what more quintessential a horror monster is there than an evil ghost?

>> No.10945828

>>10945802
I already told you that this doesn't matter. Mystia isn't really related to Loreley and the SDM library isn't called "Voile" just because of the stage's theme music.

>> No.10945831

>>10945802
Did you not even read the manual? She's a Rokurokubi. However, she also has elements of nukekubi, which I actually believe to be intentional, due to writings from a certain author.

Just because you aren't actually that familiar with many Japanese youkai doesn't mean you should automatically write them off

>> No.10945837

>>10945821
Indeed. It is very similar to eastern mythology.

>> No.10945846

>>10945828

Mystia's name is not evidence, as it's just a name. A title and a name are unrelated.
As the SDM library has no other given name, there's no reason you can say it is not named Voile.

It doesn't have any name.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to say "voilà" or something like that.

Come on, ZUN, this is like two seconds of research.

>> No.10946122

>>10945974
But if you do further research you may notice this is likely intentional and a joke reference.

From Wikipedia: "In a folktale collected for his book, Kwaidan by Lafcadio Hearn, the nukekubi is misidentified as Rokurokubi, an error that also appears in the Fighting Fantasy book, Sword of the Samurai, and in Stephen Dedman's novel The Art of Arrow-Cutting."

Lafcadio Hearn. Aka Koizumi Yakumo. The basis behind the the Maribel=Yukari theory. ZUN's clearly read his works and indeed may be going down the list of his writings about youkai. This is quite likely a reference to Hearn explicitly noting that people often get it confused with nukekubi.

Even the most placid of youkai can become belligerent if they feel their lives are in danger.

Most youkai are terrified of evil spirits. Since youkai have such simple souls, if they get possessed, it can kill them... on a permanent basis. That's also why it would make sense for the god of a shrine that specializes in youkai extermination to be an evil spirit.

I don't think there's been a recorded incident of a human spirit possessing a youkai. The possible outcome was theorized in SoPM, however.

Plus the underground folk live near many vengeful spirits, orin in particular.

>> No.10954447

>>10954322
Yeah, but they've got some defenses.
Orin is a Kassha, so she can control the spirits with her necromancy.
Okuu is a hell raven, which are native to hell.
Yuugi doesn't give a fuck, and in some circles of thought, oni are technically not youkai.
Satori (the species) terrify evil spirits because of their abilities to read minds.
Kisume and Yamame don't actually live in hell, but they live along the path.
Parsee is the embodiment of a negative human emotion, and as such, the evil spirits probably think she's one of them.

For that matter, can't any trained priest or individual kill a youkai? Isn't it a matter of knowing the appropriate rituals or possessing the necessary spiritual power? Physical blows won't do it, but it doesn't seem like a rare thing.
