I use heisig but instead of remembering through mnemonics I just add up the primitives and try to remember which combinations are which kanji. I find the stories just tend to confuse me because I'm buildig up too many assoiations, some of them pretty far fetched.

Depends on the type of learner you are. If you learn by muscle memory, you'll automatically have to write out the kanji to remember what they are. Some people are visual learners so they they can just look at it and remember.

I can do that, but learning the stroke order helps me remember on the fly when I can't see the kanji. For example, I would recognise 値段 if it was written, but if I had nothing to look at they're both too bland a kanji for me to picture, but as soon as I remember the down stroke on 値, the rest just appears. Plus, it makes your handwriting look pretty. Presentation is everything, even though I know the Japanese don't hand write much any more.
