Just how advanced is Japan in terms of technology?
Is it like the media hype paints it to be? I'm constantly hearing that it's surprisingly low-tech in many aspects of life, so I have to wonder.

I would have to say that the Japanese tend to focus more on making robots that emulate humans.
Everyone else focuses on making robots that actually do shit like carrying a load from point A to B over a path not rated for vehicles

Japan makes stuff that helps the Japanese. They have different social issues compared to the rest of the world, so their creations tend to focus on different aspects compared to elsewhere.

For example, Japan WANTS to make robots to replace humans, because they are running out of humans in certain jobs. Yes, they have unemployment, but not due to having too many people. Their population is dropping, because they made the decision to have more automation rather than allow more immigrants.

(There is option number 3, which is allowing working women to keep their jobs and have generous maternity benefits. But that is almost as alien a concept as allowing more immigration. Japanese women simply can't keep employed as a skilled professional AND get married, let along have a baby.)
