What is Touhou?

Since I started college a few years back, my overall exposure to anything Japan has plummeted (I barely watch any anime, only read a few manga series, almost no Japanese games), yet it seems like everyone I know and their waif knows about it.

Can anyone fill me in? What is it, what's it about, who are the characters, etc.?

A series of indie bullet hell shooting games by a japanese guy.

There's a ton of them plus fighting game spinoffs. The setting is Gensokyo, the land of ancient japanese ghosts, monsters, spirits as well as other stuff like vampires and magicians and gods and so forth.

Basically the games are about a shrine maiden named Reimu and a witch named Marisa who solve "incidents" like weird mists or endless night by shooting up other cute girls in big magic battles. Nobody dies, everything is tongue-in-cheek and lighthearted, and the series has good music.

The fandom, however, is really crazy and manufactures tons of fanart and doujins and amateur animation and fangames.

It's very popular.
