What do you all think about the whole primary/secondary/tertiary thing?

Depends on how you define those terms exactly. Generally though? Who cares.

Can't be helped.

Secondary and tertiary came from futaba. Secondary is another way of describing derivative works (same thing different translation), so calling a poster a secondary is implying that they mostly are familiar with secondary works. It is sometimes used as a way of calling someone out on their bullshit. Tertiary works are those that are derivatives of derivatives, or basically are based off of fanon. Tertiaries are those who are familiar with tertiary works.

Sometimes this distinction is difficult to make, because unless you are very familiar with the original work you may not be able to tell secondary and tertiary works apart. If you are familiar with the original work then you can ask whether the derivative tries to portray the original setting pretty accurately. As far as I can tell, primary is only used on /jp/ to describe the fans of the original work, but futaba does not seem to have a term for it.

I hope this helps.

What? No. They're trademarked, native /jp/ invention. I don't even recall ever seeing Japan use their 二次 and 三次 for people, it's always 二次創作.

The original author of the original copypasta certainly might have been inspired by the Japanese, but I think it'd be pretty hard to prove.

It's an important distinction. Secondaries know how to hide themselves well, but they should stop being ashamed of their secondariness.

Tertiaries don't even know enough to know that they should be ashamed.

You're not primary until you beat an extra stage. Some would argue a more stringent requirement.

You can watch a replay of an extra stage, read the text there and just pretend you have beaten it. Unlike the endings, the dialoque after the stage is usually uploaded as well.

Primary: someone who enjoys all touhou content but is knowledgeable of source material.

Secondary and tertiary are basically the same thing. They consist of people who enjoy fanon derivatives more than the actual video games and manga. These people pay little attention to source material. There's nothing wrong with liking derivative works, but there is something wrong with liking derivatives and not caring for the originals. These people are commonly referred to as "posers".

Same reason slimes are associated with manju. They look round and squishy.
