You'd be better off going to /a/. /jp/ pretty much agrees Muv-Luv is poorly written shit and Takeru is a terrible protagonist.

Of the translated eroge that haven't been completely butchered, it's probably one of the best. That being said, there are far better ones out there.

That shit traumatised my best friend by how bad it was. Killing off every bloody character in arbitrary and bloody ways does NOT make for 'drama'! It's just stupid and predictable and prevents you forming any attachment to them, as you're constantly thinking, "Oh well, I wonder who's going to be violently murdered in a pathetic attempt to give me the feels THIS time?"

Maybe but it does make it believable as a war story focused on a fight against aliens that have destroyed most of humanity.

'Realism' is all well and good, but it should not come second place to a good story. The point still stands that
a) There was no need to make the character deaths quite so graphically bloody and violent, to the extent I began to suspect the developers had a guro fetish.
And b) It was impossible to connect with any of the characters, as you just knew that at some point, they'd be brutally, horribly murdered because loldrama.

The fact it stars a man surrounded constantly by beautiful female soldiers kinda destroys its believability from the get-go.

1-It's an eroge
2-At least they tried to explain how it could happen in a reasonable way, considering the setting it's not that far-fetched.

So I played some translated VNs back in the time. Then I played MuvLuv and I really liked it. After that, I decided to learn japanese so I can play "all those awesome VNs that make MuvLuv look like a bad game". Learned japanese and I still have not found a game that was as good as MuvLuv (but there were many good ones that aren't translated, yet). And I've played most of /jp/'s recommendations. The only game I haven't played and looks promising is Baldr sky. So please suggest me "some of the better untranslated ones out there", because I'm missing something.

There would still be new men of age to serve every single year. It's an eroge sure, but exactly how many women do you have ero with in Alternative? He starts on an all female team, then gets transferred to another all female team, then after his harem sacrifices themselves for him, he goes back to his own world to his original harem forgetting his old harems. The story is absolute shit dude, the only interesting thing is the setting.

I'm sorry, when did Mass Effect 2 come into this? Besides, there's a point where the feedback of gameplay (effort in = reward out) has to take precedence over 'realism'. Why play a game where failure is the only option? It's one of the reasons I'm not a fan of Slender.

>>10838391
The characterisation in Ultimate and Alternate is substantially different to the first couple of play-throughs. Add to that, a game should be able to stand on its own merits, rather than relying upon the previous set-up. And I never said, "You knew they were going to die from the start," I just said that you become somewhat inured to it after the first couple. You stop actively CARING any more, as the sheer scale of the death cheapens each individual impact

Consider how you felt when Aeris/Aerith died in FF7, or Issara in Valkyria Chronicles. That shit came of of NO-WHERE and was MUCH more effective for it. You hadn't been desensitised to the death of main characters like that, so when they died, it REALLY hit you hard. It made you stop and go, "Well crap! What the HELL?!" and your connection to those characters left you somewhat disheartened, or teary-eyed. Now consider how you would have felt if, instead, two, three or even more of the protagonists had been killed off before then. Wouldn't have had the same emotional impact, would it?

That's why you don't spoil it for yourself, if you started from Extra, none of the characters make it evident that they're going to die, even in Alt.
