http://www.powerathletesmag.com/pages/pistols.htm
http://www.beastskills.com/pistol.htm

Those are good resources if you're interested in learning how to do it, though you need to at least be able to do the asian sqaut easily before you should attempt a pistol squat.

>> No.109264

>>109231
Seriously. I've never had a problem doing this...

>> No.109287

There's absolutely no reason why any of you should be falling over backwards squatting unless you're learning how to do a pistol, if both your feet are on the ground and you're still falling over then YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

Now that we've got that over with here's some tips.

1. Your feet need to be slightly more than shoulder-width apart, if they're too close or too wide then you won't be able to do a full squat
2. Let your toes point outwards, the wider you go the easier it will be but if you're doing a split then you've gone too far
3. Your butt needs to be centered over your heels when you're down all the way, not behind them
4. Back straight, you should be able to sit upright
5. Don't be afraid to let your knees extend in front of your feet if necessary, you're not going to hurt your knees with just your bodyweight
6. If you still can't go down all the way then you need to practice practice practice, every time you need to pick something up off the ground, squat. The more you do it the more flexible you'll get and eventually you'll have mastered the asian sqaut allowing you to use asian toilets without falling over and into your own feces.

"A wider stance is usually preferable to a narrow one."

>> No.109329

Japanese are smaller. That means their legs are shorter. And that also means that when they squat, their body remains closer to their feet, making keeping the balance easier.

Us westers are tall, with long legs. Meaning that when we squat your body is farther from the feet, which makes balance harder. You also have to squat lower because youre taller.

So, yes, its harder to do it if you´re taller.

When I was in Japan at a bar that only had a squatter, my friend had diarrhea and he went to the bathroom, then came out 5 minutes later telling me he cant do it and left the bar in search of a normal toilet. At least he came back 35 minutes later with a great story of his journey.

Also, the secret seems to be stretching the Achilles Tendon. Otherwise, you wont be able to keep from rolling back.

Keep both heels down (right drawing) as you bend both knees, which protects your knees.
One way to practice the squat if your Achilles tendons are too tight, is to hold something in front of you, like a counter or sink, and bend both knees as much as you can with both heels down.
While holding the support in front of you, lean back with both arms straight so that your weight stays over your whole foot and heels, which moves your weight off your knee joints and back onto your leg muscles.
Try to balance and sit without holding on. If you find yourself falling backward, or if your heels come up (left drawing), it is likely that your Achilles tendons are too tight for this normal activity. Put one or both hands behind you to lean on (not in the squat bathroom but just to practice).

I can do the squat thing it was taught to us in some movement and manual handling training at work, I do a liftan job

1. feet shoulder width apart hands at top of legs, front of hip joint

2. Stick your ass out, keep legs and back straight, feet and chest should be inline.

3. Soften knees, place hands out in front for balance

Keep practicing till step 4 can be achieved.

At first I would get hip pain if I held the postion for long, but after a while your body gets used to it and you wil become more flexible and it will strength certain muscles. At this point it becomes comfortable.

It's western joints that tend to limit this kind of squatting, as they are not used to the practise of bending further, whereas asians probably are due to doing so alot. Sit in seiza for half hour-an hour a day(step it up each day as your legs can take it more and more), it'll help the knees and the calves, and should help you do the squat. Knees, ankles, and hips, all three need work to attain the ability to flat foot squat comfortably.
