This is really random but I figured that if any board on 4chan would be able to help me find an answer to this, /jp/ could.

My cousin is currently working on an American version of the Densha Otoko "Train Man" story and developing it as a web series with an option to go to cable.

The idea sounds cool but I mentioned to him that it might be really hard to get the rights. He told me that they actually shouldn't need to pay for any rights to it because they aren't using the script of any of the previous adaptations (like the TV show and the films) and the story itself is something that actually happened and therefore not something that can be owned.

Is he right? Would he not need to pay rigs to adapt the story? Their test footage is awesome and I'd love to see the project get off the ground but I was curious if any of you might know the answer.

Thanks!

LOL, I was more looking into if any of you guys know what came first. The event or the story. I'd it start as an urban legend?

Either way, I don't think we can help you any more than google and wikipedia can.

I don't want to see an American Densha Otoko
The story is already cliched enough
What would a remake bring to the table?

It might popularize 4chan as a place to get dating advice.

(I'm assuming it would be using 4chan, the plot would not really work well if an anonymous forum was replaced with one of those popular places for self-absorbed exhibitionists.)

t would have to be 4chan or Reddit, yeah.

If it took place in NYC, happened on the subway and the guy came running to 4chan to ask for advice, I think it could probably make for a funny show.

It would have to focus more on insights into Internet culture and dating in the age of social media but I'd watch it.

It sure could make for a good comedy if they played all the hilarious advice given by trolls, kids and generally clueless people for laughs.

Suddenly this has my interest.

I don't think you'll need to get any sort of permission as long as you're not lifting things from the other adaptations. It's a series of events that actually happened (or so we're told), not a story someone wrote.

This would also work.

show basically how stupid the Internet is and watch him immediately fuck up after taking the advice, haha

Wasn't this about 2channel?

Your friend had better set it on world4ch or 4-ch. There's actually a few big Densha Otoko threads at the latter.
