The Atelier games come after the Ar Tonelico games; they're definitely the same universe. It's heavily implied that some of the ruins you are exploring are either the towers themselves or from the post-AT3 civilization that has since fallen. This applies to even the older Atelier games - I remember seeing quite a bit of hymnos in the ruins of AI/AI2.

I'm pretty sure, since I played AI2 after AT1, and I immediately recognized it. I've been out of the GUST fan crowd for a while, but you can probably find old threads over on ARM with translations of hymnos from their other games. It's nothing too interesting, other than solidifying the idea that the Atelier games take place in a post-apocalyptic Ar Ciel. IIRC the post-game stuff in Rorona takes place in what is assumed to be Ar Tonelico itself (Arland sits directly on top of it). Tying the two together explains a lot about the Atelier series but also leaves a lot of interesting questions - Alchemy = Grathmelding, but what about the silver horn? Is AT still functional? How do you explain the various ways that elementals are presented in earlier Atelier games? The ending to Ayesha makes more sense in some ways, and less in others. etc, etc.

Well, the origins were basically prototypes, and betas are (kind of, basically) clones of the origins. It would make sense that the ability to reproduce would be included if it was intended for betas, even if they didn't intend for Tilia herself to have time to reproduce.

GUST does 2D battle systems well though and it'd be nice for Qoga to be genuinely fun to play outside of the VN elements.

I actually thought the non-prerendered environment and 3D models were good. Like, really good. The cel shading makes it one of the prettiest games I've ever played. If the battle systems were as good, if not better than the originals, I wouldn't mind if Gust remade 1 and 2.
