No, there's nothing wrong about loving a hobby. The problem is when disingenuous people commodify the subculture or misappropriate it's symbols for the sake of being trendy.

Only ones with a significant degree of popularity. You're right that we can't stop it, but hat doesn't mean I have to like it. This only serves as my opinion and personal distinction between "otaku" and "not-otaku."

I really, REALLY hope that the trend will die out one day. I don't mind people who like anime and manga, but I just wish they wouldn't co-opt someone's passion for such superficial reasons. Is Hot Topic still popular?

Consult the archive. We've been over this multiple times. It refers to a Japanese phenomenon marked by obsessive interest in any particular hobby, but generally anime, manga, and games.

To go into it further, it's a sociocultural manifestation of a particular psychological "syndrome" and historical context. Otaku are outcasts that have embraced the fantasy worlds of their own creation.

It will give you a more comprehensive understanding of what it is. It's not that there's no agreement--there is. It's just that people are looking at it from different sides. And "moe" is fairly. It's an appeal found in ingenuous characters and refers to media with that uses the aesthetic or narrative patterns that focus on that appeal. It also refers to the emotion we feel when exposed to that appeal. I have a few well-written analyses about it if you want to read them.

That's just another symptom of a larger syndrome. You're also not taking into account the cultural context. Otaku is a Japanese phenomenon and it would be silly to deny that (would you deny that wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic?). The question now is whether or not it has extended beyond Japan. My opinion is that is has, but is rare to find

I get that the second definition refers to the feeling of liking a character/wanting to hug or hold her.

As far as I know, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Huh. Well a character is nothing more than a set of traits/symbols. Symbols alone are meaningless. The character articulates the symbols in an image that we feel moe toward. Of course, that doesn't mean we aren't attracted to the traits themselves. It's just that there's little expressed by the symbol per se. In other words, the trait is only meaningful when it belongs to a character. When we feel moe, it's the implications of the dynamic between them and then between us as viewers.

I feel that the first splits hairs and the second captures the general feel, but not the dynamic. A proper definition would be comprehensive and it can refer to both. Moe is slang after all.
