How much of Touhou is still small independent artists creating and trading original productions amongst one another without serious regards to profit, and how much of Touhou has become top-down passive consumption where large producers funnel shit to those willing to pay to eat shit?

Only like over 1/3 of all comiket is independent, the rest is our God Emperor ZUN.

Those people do not make as much money as you might think. Only the very best and popular artists sold out, the rest have to throw away their copies.

Seriously, some doujin artists do their works as a trampouline to mainstream manga artists or because they just like the shows. As I'm being told, the earnings of their works are gone in a single night out partying with their circle members.

Well I doubt most circles would be doing it strictly for the money.

I hate how artists around where I live clamour for government grants just so that they can create art. Nigga you don't need gov't cheese to record a song or publish a damn comic book

Most of them do it for the sake of the art. You can see it in their pricing, their collaborations and the work and money they put into doujinshi. I respect that mentality. American fandom just latches onto whatever's popular in an overbearing attempt to push their shitty tumblr. These western assholes all draw the same way and try to sell ugly prints for $15/20 a pop. All of it is the same "nerd chic" bullshit (Doctor Who, flavor-of-the-month anime, Adventure Time/Regular Show, Homestuck).

I've only met a couple people that I can say possess an artist's heart. Even if their work isn't polished or phenomenal, it's done for the right reasons.

I would buy one of her books.

Japanese people also often latch onto popular franchies (Touhou being a big player) in the hopes of gaining popularity. A lot of it also looks quite similar.

That picture always looked like the head was a fucking bird heard with pink feathers and the yellow heart was the beak and the headband were the eyes, and I thought it was some kind of hipster satori bird or some equally whacky shite.

After what feels like over I year, today, I just realised she was just bending her head over. OTZ
