Chronicles is pretty good if you get past the prologue thing that was mediocre, but it's a multi part story that is still ongoing and it ended with a somewhat cliffhanger revelation, so take into account that you won't get a complete story

The other day I was bored and actually went through Wakan kanji database. Final count is 1590 (but there are a lot of kanji out of the basic ones).
I realized I can read moon when I got about 400 of them, though. Never used any kind of translator.

It makes sense from a story point of view. They're going up against government agencies, and considering Makina's background might or might not be relevant, she's basically the only one out of the five with connections and knowledge to drive the overall plot forward.
At this point it's not really about "heroines" anymore, she's not my favorite character either but it's not hard to understand why she's getting the splotlight in a story that became more focused on its plot than character relationships.

I am fine with her getting the spotlight as such in going away from heroine-based to plot-based, and compensate for the lacklustre role she had previously (see the trial). My worry is it might take away the other things that could be meaningfully played by the other girls, just kind of getting dropped off. That's what I mean by unnatural prominence.

I'm not too worried about that, to be honest. Our main writer (藤崎竜太 is at the helm for the "main" story, right?) seems to have a thing for large casts, as we saw in both Amane's route in Kajitsu and the Grand route in Meikyuu. He doesn't seem like the kind of author who would just leave characters he spent so long developing by the side of the road (also evidenced by the obvious forthcoming return of Kazuki). I haven't read the Rakuen trial (and I don't intend to, either--I want to save the surprise for the full game), so I don't know what kind of setup has been done there, but the way I see it, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to have some time in the spotlight. I can't imagine anyone is going to be terribly passive, even if Yumiko does end up having a slightly larger role than the other girls. As >>10736730 said, she's the one with the connections, but she's not the only one who has potential to be useful. Hell, I'm actually excited to see how a semi-decent writer handles Michiru in a serious situation, as opposed to the hackjob who was in charge of her main route.

My favorite so far is not very original. Muv-Luv Alternative.

It is my favorite because even though I played a ton of VNs before Muv-Luv, it still invoked such heavy emotions in me. I loved it. It's not the story, the characters, the setting or anything in particular. It's the combination of all of those things that made it so great for me.

It's not perfect, I know that, but it's still very special to me. Almost as special as Katawa Shoujo is for /v/

I think that's pretty much what the commercial release is. I'm not really sure though since they may add/remove scenes or maybe even add alternate endings. I did play the trial of 假名手本忠臣蔵編 and except for some scenes (which was removed purposely) it was pretty much the same as the short trial of the commercial release.

Finished Backstage.

For the good, it was really well written in a style you don't see often in eroge.
Most eroge writer are far too wordy for their own good, which I guess is normal since they are payed to the kb but Backstage was written in a very concise way, the only other eroge I've seen in a style similar and that worked as well was Kazokei, needless to say I really liked the writing in it, very well paced and heartfelt.
I thought the writer wasn't bad before (he did Shinikiss) but the writing in Backstage is another level entirely.

For the content, Backstage is about a small theater company that train various members who came from completely different places (one is an idol, a seiyuu, a street dancer, etc...), while it's a charage Backstage goes for a more realistic route and there is a true sense of distance between the protagonist and the heroines you don't see often in this media.
The protagonist doesn't immediately become friends with them and a big part of the common route is focused solely on developing him, his relationship with the rest of the cast still being shallow till the routes, it does give a nice realistic feeling and show that the girls actually have a life outside of their interaction with the protag but that kind of thing will probably annoy people who want something more normal.

The quality of the routes kind of vary which is one of my main annoyance with the game, especially my favorite heroine Kyouka who is also allegedly the main heroine had a route that was a bit disappointing and that felt a bit shorter than the rest, the best route ended up being Yutori's, the idol.
Though none of the route was great, most of them managed to stay in line with the common route which is good enough.

For the bad, the production values are pretty bad, the art is downright doujin level at times, there are quite a bit of typos and bad recording from the seiyuu with them misreading some kanji and the play themselves lack power.
Overall pretty nice.

Finished Princess Witches. Wouldn't put into my absolute favorites though it's definitely one of those titles you start with a bit lower expectations but which ends up being surprisingly good.

I actually had to take a short breather and let 真実編 sink down a bit before proceeding to read the final route. Dated graphics and piss easy battle system were the game's weaker points but the proper story part was leagues above KuruKuru.

Going to wrap up my short mahou shoujo venture with PSS which I'll be starting tomorrow.

Finished Dunamis 15 and I hope the extra episodes are going to explain shit because right now it feels like a medical science thriller ruined by 'a wizard did it'. Story and characters are interesting enough but the way the narrative works coupled with the fact that the game is way too long makes for an annoying reading experience. Though I'm mainly annoyed that there was a really predictable but notheless completely fucking awesome plot-twist coming but then the game goes against all expectations and replaces that twist with shit. Goddamn.

Code_18 isn't even a romance game with some sci-fi elements, it's really a game about school festivals.
Since time mysteriously loops the night after the school festival you get to do the preparations for a different event with each heroine. Cosplay cafe (with everyone's sprite still in their school uniform for some reason), live band performance, haunted house, etc... You get to do all of them!
