And there was no order to 'close' the mines, Thatcher just stopped pumping so many subsidies into the industry, and it collapsed on its own from inefficiency and refusal to modernise after that.

The unions were corrupt and sought only to preserve their own power rather than helping the people. The police had to fight pitched battles to allow furnaces to receive the supplies they needed to keep them ticking over and not sustaining costly damage because the miners were blockading supply routes.
