I saw no mahjong thread, so here it goes.

/jp/, what do you think of a simplified scoring system that's based purely on yaku? Basically, 1-4 yaku would be counted as a limit like 5+ yaku, and there'd be no calcualtion of fu points. I don't think the miniscule calculation of fu adds anything to the game. It'd make the game quicker, and much easier to teach...I'm gonna be teaching it to a few people in the coming weeks.

But it's amusing to bump a 3 han hand into a mangan by racking up the fu.

Then you haven't played much.

Well, to clarify...

"For the added complexity and and time, it doesn't add enough."

Fu can be counted in a fraction of a second on the vast majority of hands. Removing it would offset the balance of the game. There's a huge difference between 2700 and 4000 and 5200 points, not to mention between 5200 and 7900 points.

Obviously, you should not teach fu counting or the scoring table to fresh beginners. Even ignoring fu, mahjong needs to be taught one step at a time. When you get to yaku and han counting, you could probably do well to let them consider basic values (1k, 2k, 4k, 8k) for the purposes of hand worth, but glossing over fu completely would be doing them disservice.

The only problem is that it makes pinfu and very low scoring hands a bit too strong.

>> No.10722007

>>10721668
It basically removes any value of gathering triplets and kans outside of special hands. Bad idea. Tan'yao+pinfu is already one of the most productive ways to win, there's no need to jack up its value even higher.

>> No.10722034

>>10721997
What if it was played without pinfu, since pinfu doesn't make as much sense without the concept of fu points?

Also, pinfu is probably the hardest yaku to explain to beginners.

>> No.10722042

>>10722034
pinfu is also one of the most common yaku to go for, so no that's stupid

Is there an app for android for calculating riichi mahjong hand values? Something like this: http://mahjong.urusai.net/scoring/

That breaks balance of the game the other way. Well, I'm not really trying to say the resulting game would be worse or something, I don't know. It would just be a lot different. Possibly too much.

When I was learning mahjong, we just had a spreadsheet printed with all the possible scores, and we somehow managed to count points without problems. And the people you're going to teach will have someone to count points for them (you). They don't need to understand everything from the start, but I think they should still be playing the game we're all playing.

Personally, I feel that riichi mahjong, as is, is balanced too far in favor of high-value and closed hands.

I actually like ippatsu ron, since it adds an element of strategy (you have to be extra careful the turn someone riichis) but I'm don't like ippatsu tsumo because it's luck based and compounds with menzen, riichi, and pinfu/dora to make ridiculous hands.

>> No.10722283

>>10722244

Yeah. I feel people should be rewarded for ron (tricking opponents, being stealthy with your discards) rather than tsumo (just random luck).

That's not true. Good players control the game's flow and are more likely to draw winning tiles from the wall.
