But how would you know if you have actually transcended lewd desires?

The only answer is to deliberately have sex without feeling desire for it.

Therefore, buddhists are sluts.

Because the entire point was a practice of free will. You can't say you truly love something if you've never been given any other choice in life but to love that thing. God doesn't want to force us to love him so he gives us the option to disobey and run away from him, because the ones that choose with their own free will to turn back to God are the ones that truly love him.

With free will comes the choice to disobey God and suffer, or to turn away from the world and love him.

Don't give me this shit. In that story, God had just finished creating everything personally, including every single aspect of the two humans in question. If there was anything that made them choose to "disobey," it was put there by God.

And just because of that, apparently the entire humanity is tainted and will be tortured for all eternity if they aren't converted to Christianity.

>If there was anything that made them choose to "disobey," it was put there by God.

Maybe it was like a Three Laws of Robotics deal, and He overlooked a loophole or they did exactly as they were supposed to, but not what He wanted.

One of the reasons Linus Torvalds kept working on Linux was because he accidentally redirected the output of his modem to his hard drive that contained his non-Linux setup, so it overwrote all his data with internet postings or whatever. It's not the operating system's fault, it did exactly what it was told to.

>> No.10705611

>>10705568
God did put it there. He opened up the option for man to have free will. In doing that man will spend the rest of his life tainted by free will and will probably give in to his whims and do sinful ungodly things, but man also has the option to do good and turn to God. God recognized that man would make mistakes and so offered a way to clear away their mistakes: through the sacrifice of animals and eventually his own self in human form as a permanent sacrifice.

Apparently either God is not omnipotent, or this whole thing is just one big gamble where every single factor involved was created by the gambler and is therefore pretty meaningless, or the gambler just doesn't care and left the variables random instead of setting them personally.

Hey don't knock cells, those guys work hard and got a lot going on. But if you expand the analogy it's not making humans look smaller but God look bigger. Because God isn't our equal ruling over us with the same thoughts and limits as us. He's infinitely greater and powerful than us. Does that sound a little less bad? Sorry if I made a bad analogy, I'm not always great on the spot.

>> No.10705660

>>10705630
He is omnipotent. Have you heard of the paradox of "can God create a rock so big he can't lift it?" Well the answer traditionally is that yes, but he wouldn't because he is self-limiting. Therein lies the answer. God withdrew his all encompassing influence to leave room for free will. Our choice is so fragile a thing and yet God in all in benevolence lets it exist so that we could choose to love him if we want to though he'll also let us choose not to and suffer for it because that's just part of free will.

I really have a hard time seeing how this is benevolence. Somehow, damning someone for all eternity just because they were born in a heathen culture or because they lost their faith doesnt sound very fair. Same for all those trials characters in the Bible have to put up with.

Don't forget: the cause of the "punishment" is finite, but the actual "punishment" itself is eternal.

Or so the "New Testament" says, anyway. Honestly, that entire thing makes no sense.

>> No.10705729

>>10705684
Trials typically make a person better, there's many instances of that in the Bible. There are some instances of people being punished, and plenty of instances of messes people just made on their own and suffering the consequences of that. Taken person by person there's unique circumstances and lessons to be learned by the suffering everyone in the Bible goes through.

As for afterlife stuff, well that varies on who you ask. Really hell is simply death and distance from God. The lake of fire is where rebellious supernatural things are cast away depending on how literally you take Revelations. There's judgments where you're weighed and measured supposedly but it never digs into it that much. Much of what people think of as hell is just fanfiction stuff from Dante's Inferno. Really what you'll find in the Bible is how true immortality only comes through turning back to God...whereas the wages of sin are death.

Contrary to popular belief, the "devil" barely shows up in the old testament and when he does he is not that bad a guy. Also, if you thought the word "Satan" refers to this "devil" figure, you should probably go look up the term because it's something completely different. And for one of the most laughable things ever (I still can't get over this), Jesus calls himself "Lucifer" in Revelation 22:16. Who knew Jesus was actually the "devil"?

Until the "New Testament" came along, things like "eternal damnation" never even really came up, believe it or not. Honestly, the whole thing got twisted way out of control.
